Slaney Rovers AFC

Div. One Womens League Champions 2011 - 12

Div.One Champions 11 - 12

March 11`th. will always be remembered as the day that Slaney Rovers Ladies finally lifted their first league title. In the last game of the season, Hanover Harps came to Rathvilly, needing only a drew to win the league. Slaney needing a win, went for the jugular from the start and took an early lead, through Catherine Dempsey, who finished off a fine cross fron Sinead Morris. Slaney later on, increased their lead, when the mc Grath sisters got in on the act, with Edel`s cross from the right wing, found Carole with space, to score Slaney`s second. Defending champions Harps came out in the 2`nd. half and scored early, and were piling on the pressure for an equaliser when one of their players was caught in possession from a tackle from Maggie Nolan, who then slipped the ball to Catherine, for Slaney`s third. The same combination scored slaney`s 4`th. with Catherine finishing off a free kick from Maggie. Harps never gave up and pulled a goal back but Slaney Ladies deserved this win. First league captain was Maggie Nolan and she played a captain`s role and with Catherine scoring her 3`rd. goal, made her top scorer in Div. one  (with 27 goals ) which earned her the golden Boot from the Carlow & District League Awards night.
Finally a ladies league winners medal after nine seasons - it was worth the wait!
