Tinryland GFC club notes 5th October 2025

As the GAA season winds down there were 4 Tinryland teams in action in the past week.

Pride of place must go to the boys U14 team that captured the division 2B title at the Centre of Excellence on Wednesday last after a thrilling game that went to extra time against our neighbours Palatine watched by a sizeable crowd. Trailing by 3 points at half time Tinryland finished well in normal time to force a draw and in extra time got the vital scores that saw them triumph on a scoreline of Tinryland 3-12 Palatine 2-12. This team is a very young side with the majority of players still U14 next year. Well done to their mentors Keith McGrath, John Paul Moore, Thomas Pender and Alan Cullen.

On the adjacent pitch at the training centre on Wednesday, Tinryland minors also were involved in a game that went to extra time in the shield semi-final against Rathvilly.  At half time Tinryland trailed by one point to the Wicklow border side and after leading for a time in the 2nd half Tinryland came from behind to snatch a draw with the last kick of the game. In the extra time period Rathvilly scored 7 points to Tinryland’s two to advance to the shield final against Clonmore/Grange. Outstanding for Tinryland in this game were Lorcan O’Connor, Jamie Doyle, Luke Cahill, Mikey Byrne, Tadhg Deane and Ross Moran.

Our 2nd adult team was involved in one of the best games played this year in the JFC (B) finishing all square with Clonmore in a nine-goal thriller at the centre Of Excellence on Sunday morning. The team must now do it all again on this coming Friday 10th October at 7.30 p.m. in the Centre of Excellence. Outstanding for Tinryland in this game were goalie Lee Buggle, Gregg Murphy, Shane O’Neill, Tomas Murphy, Padraic Whelan, Evan Doyle and subs. Conall McGuire, Adam Mullen and Glen Doyle.

Tinryland U16 team had a good win over Clonmore/Grange in the Division 2 quarter final on Monday. In the semi-final against Bagenalstown Gaels on Saturday last Tinryland gave it their all and looked to be heading for the final at one stage. The concession of two late goals in the 2nd half saw the game swing in Bagenalstowns favour and despite a late rally Tinryland lost out by the minimum margin to the boys from the banks of the Barrow on a scoreline of 3-7 to 1-12.

After a year unbeaten at all championship levels including All Ireland and Leinster Bennekerry/Tinryland senior ladies lost out by two points to old rivals Old Leighlin in the TelLab Carlow senior football final at the SETU grounds on Saturday last. Two goals from Cliodhna Ni Se at the end of both halves looked to have done enough to retain their title but a late goal from Old Leighlin captain Caoimhe O’Neill enabled the ladies from Molaise park win their 11th senior title.

Next weekend will see our senior team battling to stay in the senior ranks when they take on Eire Og in the relegation playoff. Tinryland have been senior since 2004 having been previously relegated in 1999 and a big effort will be needed to overcome one of Carlow’s traditional elite teams. The game is fixed for Netwatch Cullen Park at 2.15 p.m. on Sunday next 12th October.

The club lotto jackpot still stands at €10,000 and can be played online via the club force app or by purchasing a ticket for the Monday night lotto draw from any committee member. Last years lucky dip winners were: Matthew O’Toole, Katie Hickey, Michael Kehoe Jnr, and Rita Whelan.
