St Lomans Mullingar Club Notes 26/08/2025:

Club Notes 25/08/2025

Junior championship: St Loman’s Mullingar 2-14, The Downs 2-13

St Loman’s Mullingar held their nerve to secure a dramatic one-point victory over The Downs, finishing 2-14 to 2-13 after a pulsating contest that went right to the wire.

The opening exchanges saw St Loman’s Mullingar carve out the better chances. Inside five minutes , Ryan Jones forced an early goal opportunity, before Dowdall tested the Downs’ keeper a minute later, only to see his effort brilliantly saved. Patient build-up play was a feature of Loman’s first-half dominance, with Dowdall applying a clinical finish to one flowing move. Rory Sheahan was unlucky not to add to the tally when he rattled the crossbar, but the pressure soon told as Mulderry, set up smartly by Nedas, Kenny, set up Mulderry who found the net. Kenny a few minutes later would add his own goal.

By half-time, St Loman’s Mullingar were well in control, leading 2-10 to 0-05 and looking comfortable.

The second half, however, told a very different story. The Downs came out revitalised, chipping away at the deficit and finding two goals of their own to drag themselves right back into contention. What had looked like a routine win quickly turned into a tense battle as the visitors grew in confidence, while Loman’s struggled to replicate their first-half fluency.

With the game level entering injury time, both sides had chances, but it was St Loman’s Mullingar who showed composure when it mattered most. Deep into the final minute, they worked the ball into a scoring position and calmly slotted over the winning point to seal victory in front of a relieved home support.

In the end, it was a game of two halves: dominance and flair in the first, resilience and grit in the second. For St Loman’s Mullingar, the result was proof of their ability not just to play attractive football, but to dig deep when their backs are against the wall.

Senior championship: St Loman’s Mullingar 2-14, The Downs 2-13

Our senior men, defending county champions, came up against The Downs in TEG Cusack Park on Sunday evening in Round 3 of the Shay Murtagh Senior Championship. In a repeat of last year’s final, it was The Downs who took control early, finding the net inside the opening two minutes and pushing on to dominate much of the first half. By the break, they led 3-08 to 0-06.

Despite the difficult start, our lads kept battling. Eoghan Hogan got us off the mark with a fine point, while John Heslin added two from play. Cillian Plunkett chipped in with a big score before half-time, and Conán O’Hara gave us a lift with a well-taken goal in the second half. Shane Dempsey also struck a two point free with his usual accuracy.

However, The Downs always had the scoreboard pressure and pushed on to run out deserving winners on a final scoreline of The Downs 3-16, St Loman’s 1-10.

It wasn’t our night, but there are still plenty of games to come in the championship and we know this group will respond. The lads will regroup, learn from this performance, and be ready to bounce back stronger in the next round.

U20 championship: St Loman’s Mullingar v Tubberclaire

Our U20s were in action on Tuesday night and, despite a tough result, the lads battled bravely from start to finish. With several injuries in the panel, a number of younger players stepped up and showed great heart in difficult circumstances – well done to each of you.

We also want to acknowledge our older U20s who have now played their last game at this level. Over the years you’ve brought St Loman’s to multiple county finals, showing real commitment, leadership, and pride in the jersey. Thank you for all you’ve given at underage, and we look forward to seeing you step up and continue your journey in adult football with the club.
