St Lomans GAA Club Notes 25/09/2023:

The Week ahead:

As we approach the business end of the season, and the honours are up for grabs. We have a week to show our support and our colours for all our teams still battling it out. As if anybody needed reminding our Senior Men and Junior men both contest their respective finals on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Our junior men kick the weekend off on Saturday afternoon before the Intermediate final, where they will be hoping to go one step further than in 2020 when we last contested in the final at this grade. This team have put in a colossal effort all year and we need to give them a huge support to urge them on every step of way. Robbie Kenny’s charges want to see a sea of blue in TEG Cusack Park!

Our Senior ladies face The Downs in a semi-final next Sunday in Shandonagh just over two hours before the senior final. Although the timing isn’t ideal, we are willing everybody to try attended both matches if possible. Our ladies have come on leaps and bounds this year having won five out of seven games this year, after just winning two in the previous two years combined. Ciaran Kilmurray’s team have also recorded memorable wins over St Mary’s Rochfortbridge, Garrycastle and Mullingar Shamrocks along the way. They’ll need all our supporters cheering them on in Shandonagh against a strong Downs team.

Lastly our senior men are fighting to bring the Flanagan cup back to Lomans at 2.15pm next Sunday. The match will be shown live on TG4. Let’s show the watching public, the pride we have for our team in St Lomans Mullingar. We want to see Blue and White, hats, scarves, flags, tops or whatever you can carry into TEG Cusack Park. With Paddy Dowdall at the helm, we’ve had great support all year but we need to step it up a notch this Sunday! The Senior and junior mens teams will also be doing a meet and greet this Tuesday at 6.30pm for any underage boys and girls who wish to meet their role models.

This morning, the Blue and White bunting was put up in Home Instead Lakepoint Park. We are lucky to have appeared in so many finals over the last few years, winning multiple honours. So if you haven’t already, get the flags and bunting up and show your support for the Blues! Tickets for the games will be available via the usual links on social media this week.

Village Barn Ladies Senior Championship:

St Lomans’s Mullingar 2-17 Moate All Whites 0-00

Last Wednesday evening saw our senior ladies sign off the group stage with a routine victory over Moate All Whites. Before the game a minute’s silence was held for the late Sean Heavin. All at St Lomans Mullingar extend their condolences to the Heavin family. The visitors only had fifteen players available on the night and the game in truth was heavily one-sided with the home side winning comfortably. This win confirms the Saints’ place in the semi-final where they will face The Downs. Date, time, and Venue are still to be confirmed. Well done to Ciaran Kilmurray’s side on getting the job done.

Team; Jane McKenna, Ellen Kilmurray, Muireann Scally, Sandra McGrath, Aileen Martin, Megan Ennis, Lara McCartan, Annie Kilmurray, Vicky Carr (0.03), Laura Murphy (0.01), Caoimhe Kilmurray (0.03), Ciara Blundell (0.08, 0.03f), Shauna Traynor, Shannon Breslin (1.00), Katie Kilmurray (1.02). Under 13 Division 1 semi-final:

St Lomans Mullingar 1-16 Athlone 1-06

Congratulations to our U13 boys who defeated Athlone 1-16 to 1-6 in Lakepoint Park on Friday evening to qualify for the Division 1 championship final.

The boys played beautiful football throughout but were guilty of some wayward shooting and led 0-8 to 0-4 at the break. Wing forward Harry Brennan finished decisively to the net early in the second period to extend the lead and despite the best efforts of a skilful and determined Athlone side, we ran out deserving winners.

With senior and junior finals on the horizon, it’s fantastic to see the first of our underage teams reach another final. Our U15 boys will be hoping to follow them when they face The Downs in their Division 1 semi-final next Friday evening while the U15 Division 2 team travel to Tubberclair to play the hosts in their championship semi-final on Saturday morning.

On a sidenote, huge credit to Nigel Hogan for having the pitch in pristine condition last night. It was a real treat for both sides to play on that surface under the glare of the lights
