Hi members,
Please find below the club notes from Watergrasshill Hurling Club for week ending 14th June.
Weekly round-up
The highlight of this past week was no doubt the adventures of our U-11 boys. On Saturday - they literally divided themselves in two, playing football in the colours of Glenville. Half of the boys (and half of their coaches) made the short trip to Páirc Uí Rinn to compete in the finals of the John Kerins tournament & and the other half (including the other half of their coaching team) made the trip to Dromtariffe to compete in the Brian Cronin tournament.
In Páirc Uí Rinn, having qualified for the final stages of the John Kerins tournament over recent weeks, the boys overcame St. Nicks in the quarter final (4-4 to 3-3) and Valley Rovers (2-6 to 1-5) in the semi-final. A piper led Glenville & Bishopstown around the pitch before the final, an experience to be remembered for all the boys. Nerves were shattered in the final where they came out on top beating Bishopstown 5-5 to 5-4 with the winning point coming in injury time from Ciarán Lee. Following the game, captain Robbie O’Leary accepted the John Kerins cup from Ann Kerins to the delight of the boys, their coaches, families and supporters. Well done to all concerned on winning such a great tournament in honor of a great Gael, an experience to be treasured for all.
Meanwhile, in Dromtariffe the other U-11 team faced Aghinagh, Millstreet and St Peters & qualified for next weeks shield final. Again, the boys dug deep when games seemed to be going against them, but still came through to fight another day.
Then to round off the weekend, the boys donned the red and white of Watergrasshill to host Sliabh Run in Watergrasshill on Sunday evening. Well done to the boys for a great weekend of sport - they are a credit to the parish showing skill, heart, comradery and sportsmanship. Credit also to their coaches and parents who supported and transported them all weekend.
Our U13’s played host to Kiltha Óg last Saturday morning and both teams played out a very entertaining draw. These teams have met on a few occasions in recent years and the games are always competitive and close encounters. This was no different. Our boys played very well and you could see they were up for this one from the throw in, leading by 3pts at halftime, 1-6 to 1-3, but we knew Kiltha Óg would put it up to us in the second half. They boys dug in and played excellently as a unit and we found ourselves up 6pts with less than ten minutes to go. However despite great defending our visitors did get two good goals, before we took a one point lead in the dying minutes. A late free for Kiltha Óg levelled it late on and that’s how it finished. Well done to the seventeen boys we had today, they battled brilliantly and were unlucky not to take the spoils.
Some big games ahead this week to look forward to. First up on Thursday 16th June are our Fé-14 boys who take on St. Catherine’s in the final of the Rebel Óg East Fé-14 D1 Championship in Ballinacurra at 7:00pm. Then on Tuesday 21st June our Fé-17 boys take on Kilworth-Araglen Óg in the Rebel Óg North Fé17 D1 League Shield Final in Glanworth at 7:00pm. Best of luck to the boys and please do get out and support them if you can.
Text Service Re-launch
This year we are re-launching our supporters text messaging service as another way to keep members up-to-date with upcoming fixtures.
If you would like a weekly supporter’s message with fixtures for Watergrasshill & Glenville hurling, football, camogie and ladies football matches please contact Paud O'Neill 0879890964 or Barry Joyce 0871847017.
There is a nominal fee of €5 per year for this service.
We would also appreciate if members could share this service with those who are not on social media as we have found in previous years that this service is very beneficial for them.
