Next Season (2022/2023) we are planning on taking the first group of girls from Monivea RFC on tour. Our intention is to bring 26 girls to Portugal in April 2023 to participate in the Rugby Youth Festival - https://www.portugalrugbyfestival.com/en/.
At the beginning of this season 2021/2022, the Club decided to promote girls’ rugby. We ran a 'Give it a Try' programme (GIAT) for girls who had never played rugby or participated in the sport before. 95% of the girls who turned up had never touched a rugby ball before, they had never played 15 a side on a full pitch, and some were only vaguely aware of the rules of Rugby Union. By the second half of the season, they had improved to a point where we were able to enter our club's first U16 team in the Connacht Junior Cup.
We are currently (May/June 2022) running our second GIAT programme in conjunction with Canterbury and Connacht Rugby, and the participation of girls playing rugby in Monivea RFC is growing all the time. The club now plans to develop, promote, and put resources in place to support and retain girls in rugby, through their mid-teens and beyond. This does not happen without a lot of hard work and commitment from everyone involved.
We are seeking sponsorship from our community through fundraising and look to local businesses to get behind the teams. Your sponsorship will help these girls continue to play rugby and make this trip a reality to represent their club at the Youth Festival in Lisbon.
