IHC, Shamrocks 1-12, An Rinn 0-10.
Shamrocks Intermediate hurlers won their first round hurling championship tie for the first time in several years following opening round draws for four years running. The omens didn’t look too well before the throw in with the news that Colm Roche would miss out through illness, and Adam Crawford was also unavailable, but if that was a setback for the team they certainly didn’t show it as they threw themselves into the game and tackled as if their lives depended on it. Joe Leahy, who looks back to his best after a couple of seasons beset by injuries, opened the scoring with a point. An Rinn replied with a free, then John Paul Lucey fired over another point before the gaeltacht men scored the next three points to give them a two point lead. Edward Lonergan scored from a free before two more Ring scores gave them a six points to three lead, and with the strong wind behind them, things were looking bleak. It was then that the character of this young Shamrocks side really showed because they made light of the tough conditions to score the next three points to end the half on six points apiece. Considering how strong the wind was, I think this was where the game was won. Again we started the second half with the first score, a point from Edward Lonergan before three pointed frees from Donie Breathnach gave the Gaeltacht men the lead again. A free from Edward brought us back to a point before another free from the same man somehow found it’s way into the back of the net to give us the lead. An Rinn showed their spirit by replying with a point immediately, but we finished well with a tremendous point from Shane Roche who was very solid at centre back, two pointed frees from Edward Lonergan, and Joe Leahy, who opened the scoring, closed it with the last score from play to round off a great win. This was a great team effort with the hooking and blocking and sheer willingness to work hard giving us the edge in a close fought match. Ivan O’ Neill, starting his first championship match certainly justified his selection, and another teenager Kieran Crawford, who was operating as a third midfielder also saw a lot of the play, and can be very happy with his display. I must give great credit to Edward Lonergan who, despite missing his first two frees, settled down to find his range from placed balls, and finished the game with 1-7, one from play. Unfortunately we won’t be playing our next hurling championship match for quite a while, as we now turn our focus on the football championship for the next two weeks. Panel; Thomas Goulding, Padraig Ahearne, Thomas O’ Donovan, Brian Harnedy, Ivan O’ Neill, Shane Roche (0-1), Padraig Roche, Billy Hynes, John Paul Lucey (0-2), Edward Lonergan (1-7), Chris Murphy, Stephen Lucey, Edward Hynes, Joe Leahy (0-2), Kieran Crawford, Shane Harnedy, Liam Motherway, Cathal Herlihy, Tom Roche, Ciaran O’ Keeffe, Michael Lucey, Martin Delaney.
Junior Football Championship.
The Junior Football Championship kicks off this weekend where we play Geraldines in Cappoquin next Sunday 14th April at 12 noon. This was a county title we should have won last year, hopefully we can be at the business end later on in the year. Come along and give them some support.
Shamrocks 4 on Deise panel.
Back in the 80’s Shamrocks once had three players on the Waterford Football panel, the legends that were Liam Dalton, Dan Casey, and Michael Neville lined out against Limerick in the Munster Senior Football Championship. Liam played for the Deise for 14 years, but that day was truly unique. Tonight (Wednesday) Waterford take on Tipperary in the Munster Minor Football Championship in Tipperary Town at 6.45pm, with no fewer than four Shamrock players on the panel. Liam’s sons Mark and Tom Dalton, Padraig Hynes, and Eoghan Lenehan make tonight’s match a special one for our club, and an occasion that may never be duplicated. Well done to all four of you, your club is proud of you all, and ‘Hon The Deise!!
Condolences.
Shamrocks GAA would like to offer our sympathies to Pat Casey on the death of his father John recently. We would also like to sympathise with Agnes Geary on the death of her brother John Barry in Tourin recently. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam.
