Barry Whelan was during 2011 the undisputed Tramore Juvenile Hurling All-Star. Not alone was he automatic Full-Back for the East Waterford Under 16 Team that competed in the Divisional Munster Championship, he led the team as Winning Captain of the prestigious Gleeson Cup - a distinction not achieved by an East Waterford Team or Captain in three long years. As the year progressed his performances made him a certainty as Corner Back on the Waterford Team for the Tipperary Supporters Club Under 16 Hurling All Ireland Tournament. During the Tournament itself the team with Barry in defence gave an exhibition of true grit overcoming Laois; and Kilkenny to reach the semi-final against much fancied Limerick who had seen off none less than Offaly and Antrim. Being without minor panelist Micheál Harney the task was great but the team held firm against all tactics to run out winners during a second half that was all Waterford where every attack was turned by the Waterford defence with Barry central throughout.
