St Lomans Mullingar Club Notes 22/04/2024:

ACFL Division 1:

St Lomans Mullingar 2-16 Athlone 0-08

Our senior men managed to get a further two points on the board last Friday night when they visited Athlone. The returning John Heslin marked his comeback with a goal, rifling into the net in the first minute after a great team move. The hosts responded with a free but Lomans then hit four consecutive points courtesy of Kelvin Reilly, John Heslin and a Shane Dempsey double. The sides went on to trade scores with TJ Cox and Sam McCartan opening their accounts for the visitors. Four points before the break increased the Mullingar side’s stranglehold on the game with Eoghan Hogan pointing in between a Hat-trick of Ronan O’Toole points. Paddy Dowdall’s side went into half time leading by double digits.

Credit to the home side, who steadied the ship for a more even second half, both teams hit four points each in the third quarter. A treble for Heslin and a Shane Dempsey point did the damage for the saints. Shane Dempsey and Cillian Lynn exchanged points for their respective sides from play before TJ Cox managed to find a goal for himself and rubber stamp a victory for his side. Cox added to his tally with a final score from play, seeing the county champions run out fourteen point winners.

Another victory on the road means ambitions of a league final are still attainable with four games to play. The return of John Heslin, Ronan O’Toole, Sam McCartan and Jason Daly from their county exploits brought an extra bit of sharpness to the play for the blues. Eoghan Hogan and David Whelan produced good performances in defence. Sam McCartan ran the show from wing-back, along with the scoring power from Heslin O’Toole and Dempsey gave us the platform for victory. Next up is Tang at home in two weeks’ time.

Ladies division 1 League:

St Lomans Mullingar 4-10 Moate All Whites 0-04

Our senior ladies continued their one hundred per cent record in 2024 with a fine win over Moate in Lakepoint Park last Sunday. The sides were level in the first twenty minutes with scores at a premium, just the three points from either side. Shannon Breslin, Jayne Charles and Ciara Blundell were all on target for the blues. From then on the hosts took complte control. Goals from Blundell and Katie Kilmurray either side of a superb Jyane Charles score before the interval saw the Mullingar side with an eight point lead at half time.

The second half was plain sailing for the saints who hit 1-05 without reply. Aileen Martin pointed in between four points from Ktaie Kilmuarry and a stunning goal from Laura Murphy to firmly extinguish any hopes of a comeback from the vistors. Moate scored thir final point in the 50th minute but the saints had the final word with a point from Blundell and a super goal from substitute Anna Sheehy sealed a facile victory for Ciaran Kilmurray’s side who face county champions Milltown next time out. It was a brilliant all-round team performance from the blues. It included great displays from the likes of Julie McLaughlin, Eve Scally, Ciara Blundell, Katie Kilmurray, Shannon Breslin and Laura Murphy.
