St Lomans GAA Club Notes 18/04/2023:

ACFL Division 1 :

St Lomans Mullingar 3-13 Castledaly 0-07

Last Saturday Castledaly visited Lakepoint Park on a wet windy April evening. The visitors opened the scoring from a placed ball, but the home side responded with three swift points via Sean Flanagan and a Danny McCartan double. Castledaly responded with a score from play, but the Blues would increase their lead with a goal at the other end. Eoghan O’Keefe broke through the heart of the defence and though the chance seemed to have gone, O’Keefe kept his composure and put the ball on a plate for Sean Flanagan who had the simplest of tasks to palm the ball into an open goal.

The sides exchanged scores with McCartan on target with an excellent point from play before three points on the spin from McCartan himelf to stretch the lead out even further. Jack Geoghegan opened his account from wing back before both sides hit a free each to leave Lomans eight points to the good at the interval.

The Second half brought a lull in the scoring with only three points scored in the first twenty minutes of play, Danny McCartan once again doing the damage for the home side. The game was put beyond any doubt when Enda Gaffney scored the second goal of the match after Sean Flanagan was initially denied by a brilliant save, Gaffney however was first on hand to react and end the affair as a contest.

The Saints finished with a flourish outscoring and tagged on three extra scores with Gaffney, Flanagan and Conor Regan all on the scoresheet. Castledaly hit a late point, but the last word went to David Whelan who finished off a great team goal after good build up play from substitutes Ciaran Smyth and Tadhg Kenny.

Another win for Paddy Dowdall’s side who remain unbeaten in division 1. Superb performances came all over the field, particularly from David Whelan, Jack Geoghegan, Conor Regan, Eoghan O’Keefe and Sean Flanagan. However, the best player on the pitch was Danny McCartan ending with a tally of eight points.

Team; Rory Matthews, Seanie Dinnegan, Darragh O’Keefe, Gerry Grehan, Jack Geoghegan (0.01), David Whelan (1.00), Conor O’Donoghue, Ryan Jones, Enda Gaffney (1.01), Tristan Graham, Conor Regan (0.01), Eoghan O’Keefe, Sean Flanagan (1.01), Oisín Hogan, Danny McCartan (0.08, 0.04f). Subs used; Eoghan Hogan, Ciaran Smyth, Chris Gilbert, Tadhg Kenny.

ACFL Division 3:

St Lomans Mullingar 5-09 Kilbeggan Shamrocks 2-09

Last Sunday morning our division three side travelled to take on Kilbeggan Shamrocks. Cian Daly got the opening score before the home side hit three unanswered points. Both teams traded scores with Ciaran Smyth on target for the Blues. Tristan Graham reduced the deficit with a placed ball before Robbie Kenny’s men got the first  of seven goals in the match, the first came through a super finish from Chris Gilbert. Gilbert added to his tally moments later with a driven point. The hosts hit two points in reply, but Tadhg Kenny found the net before the interval, fisting into the net after a superb pass from his twin brother Eoghan.

The second half saw the Saints lead wiped after a quickfire goal and point for Kilbeggan, but remarkably Lomans went up the other end and repeated the act. Both scores coming from the outstanding Chris Gilbert. Amazingly Kilbeggan responded with a goal of their own to leave the minimum between the sides. To Lomans’ credit they never panicked and settled down to score four points on the bounce courtesy of Eoghan Kenny, Eoghan Hogan and a brace from Tristan Graham. Shamrocks responded with two points to leave the deficit at three points. Late on, the Mullingar men added two late goals courtesy of Ciaran Smyth and Tadhg Kenny to seal an excellent nine-point win.

Although the Blues were worthy winners, the nine-point margin was perhaps harsh on Kilbeggan who spurned several goal chances with Garrett Hickey making several great saves. Ciaran Smyth was excellent at wing back, and Eoghan Hogan was a colossus in midfield. Chris Gilbert and Tadhg Kenny were electric up front and were the two stand out performers and tore Kilbeggan to shreds at times. Another great victory which means its five wins on the bounce in division three.

Team; Garrett Hickey, Tom Dorr, Shane Flynn, Mark O’Gara, Ciaran Smyth (1.01), Seanie Dinnegan, Sean Lancaster, Eoghan O’Keefe, Eoghan Hogan (0.01), Eoghan Kenny (0.01), Chris Gilbert (2.02), Adam Lynch, Cian Daly (0.01), Tristan Graham (0.03, 0.02f), Tadhg Kenny (2.00)

ACFL Division 4:

Tyrrellspass 1-12 St. Lomans Mullingar 0-7

Since this 3rd Lomans side were first promoted to Div 4 in 2019, it’s fair to say that they’ve been underdogs in every game they’ve played since and Thursday night was no different, coming up against a strong Tyrrellspass 2nd side.

Referee Ken Gunning did an excellent job throughout and allowed the game to run freely, leading to an open game of football during the 60 minutes. Lomans will be disappointed with some aspects of the game, mainly giving away possession needlessly, coupled with some poor accuracy. Perhaps this young blue side should have got more out of the game, but at the end of the day Tyrrellspass were deserved winners and weren’t flattered by the scoreline.

Lomans can be thankful to Stephen Gallagher that the scoreline wasn’t greater, Gallagher pulled off 2 top class saves just before halftime reminding people why he was previously Westmeath’s number one custodian. The full back line of Evan Johnson, Nigel Graham (team captain) and Mark O’Gara, all performed admirably too, others to catch the eye were Jimmy Kelly, Adam Lynch and Senan Russell. This side is all about the Panel, and for the third game in a row the introduction of substitutes provided a clear and obvious impetus to the match. Tristan Johnson, Adam Brady, Mark Tunney and Ethan Browne all played well when introduced, with Johnson and Tunney both making the scoresheet.

Team; Stephen Gallagher, Evan Johnson, Nigel Graham (c), Mark O’Gara, Tom Dorr, Senan Russell, Adam O’Connor, Adam Lynch (0-3), Frank Kavanagh, Eoghan Kenny (0-1), Jimmy Kelly, Darren Kavanagh, Luke Heduvan (0-1), Byron Graham & Shane Mulderry. Subs Used; Tristan Johnson (0-1), Adam Brady, Mark Tunney (0-1) & Ethan Browne.
