ACFL Division 1: St. Loman’s Mullingar 1-19, Garrycastle 3-11

St. Loman’s Mullingar secured a valuable and hard-earned win in their ACFL Division 1 campaign, overcoming a spirited Garrycastle side in a thrilling, free-flowing encounter that showcased the best of club football. The final score line—1-19 to 3-11—reflects a game full of momentum swings, individual brilliance, and real grit from St Loman’s.

Loman’s got off to a dream start with sharp movement and direct play. Shane Dempsey picked out TJ Cox with a superb cross-field ball, and Cox duly slotted over the opening point to settle the side early. Dempsey then added a point of his own, and Cox followed up moments later with a composed finish to the net after capitalising on space inside—giving Loman’s an early 1-3 lead and full control of the game.

John Heslin, returning to the fold with authority, nailed a perfectly struck two-point free, stretching the lead further. The forwards were linking up smoothly, and the battle for kickouts with Rory Sheahan helping St Loman’s win the lion’s share of possession. One of the team’s scores of the half came soon after, a sweeping move starting from Riley Sheahan, involving quick handpasses and finished coolly by Mark Tunney, showing the fluid, attacking intent of the side.

However, Garrycastle didn’t let St Loman’s run away with it. They found their way back into the contest with a two-point free after a period of sustained pressure. St Loman’s attacking rhythm dipped slightly, with a few turnovers inside the final third halting momentum and allowing the hosts to grow in confidence. By half-time, Loman’s led 1-7 to 0-6

Garrycastle came out flying in the second half, landing three quick points without reply and then turning the game on its head with two rapid-fire goals, and suddenly the home side led 2-10 to 1-09. It was a turning point, and with the crowd behind them, Garrycastle looked poised to pull off a big result.

But Loman’s dug deep. The introduction of experienced players Darragh O’Keefe and David Whelan brought renewed drive and composure. Conan O’Hara made a massive impact, landing a crucial two-point score at a moment when Garrycastle were pushing hard to extend their lead.

John Heslin, ever-reliable, slotted another two-point free to stem the tide, and as the game entered its final ten minutes, St. Loman’s began to regain control in key areas. Shane Dempsey and TJ Cox added further points, while the defence tightened up impressively, denying Garrycastle time and space on the ball.

Despite conceding three goals overall, St Loman’s defence deserves credit for how they managed the closing stages, particularly under pressure. Calm heads and disciplined tackling saw out the final moments with maturity and control.

This was a win built on a strong start, a gritty comeback, and intelligent game management in the final quarter. While conceding three goals will no doubt be an area for reflection, the ability to absorb pressure and respond with scores of their own was a testament to the group’s character and composure.

Notable performances came from Heslin with his 2 point frees, Cox and Dempsey. The midfield battle, led by the likes of Rory Sheahan who disrupted a lot of Garrycastles long kickouts, he was also key to regaining control when it mattered most and the setting up of big scores for St Lomans. And with this, he earned himself the man of the match.

With this win, St. Loman’s strengthens their position in the Division 1 table and heads into the next round full of confidence and momentum. The blend of youth and experience continues to serve them well, and this victory serves as another step forward in what is shaping up to be a competitive and promising league campaign.
