St Lomans Mullingar Club Notes 17/03/2025:

ACFL Division 1:

Mullingar Shamrocks 1-11 St Loman’s Mullingar 1-10

The latest rule changes in Gaelic football were put to the test in this fiercely contested ACL Division 1 clash, adding an extra layer of intrigue to an already intense local derby. The adjustments, designed to speed up play and encourage attacking football, were evident throughout the match, with both teams adapting to the new dynamics. From quick restarts to the impact of the three-man back rule, these changes played a crucial role in shaping the flow of the game. While some moments showcased their potential, others led to frustration, proving that teams are still navigating the evolving landscape of the sport.

Shane Dempsey was in superb form early, scoring three points from play in the first half, while Denis Corroon kept Shamrocks in the game with two frees. Both teams had their chances to find the net, with shots crashing off the woodwork at either end. A crucial moment arrived when Peter Foy scored St Loman’s first two-pointer of the game after a quickly taken 45. However, shortly after, in the 29th minute, St Loman’s were reduced to 14 men, disrupting their flow and altering the rhythm of the game.

Despite being a man down, St Loman’s remained resilient, And a strong defence lead by Nathan Lally steered Loman’s to a 0-5 to 0-4 lead at halftime. Shamrocks, benefiting from the wind at their backs, came out strong in the second half, but the introduction of John Heslin steadied St Loman’s. However, Shamrocks soon pulled ahead thanks to a goal by Dean Moore, although its legitimacy was questioned under the new three-men forward rule. The goal gave Shamrocks a four-point lead, sparking debate among both players and supporters.

St Loman’s dug deep and fought back with points from Heslin and a standout second half performance from Mark Tunney. Riley Sheahan continued to impress, with his move to the middle of the park proving to be a game-changer. Then came the turning point— A second three-back infringement proved costly for Mullingar Shamrocks as the ball was swiftly sent the length of the field, setting up John Heslin for a 20-metre free. Heslin’s quick shot caught the Shamrocks keeper and went crashing into the back of the net to score the equalising goal. Tunney and Conán O’Hara contributed three more points between them, and it seemed like St Loman’s were about to edge ahead.

But Shamrocks had the final say. A three-man back infringement denied MacNamara what would have been a second goal, and momentum shifted in Shamrocks' favour. A late two-point free from Corroon, followed by Moore’s final score, sealed the win for Shamrocks in a very close game.

It was an exciting, high-energy contest, standing in stark contrast to the slow, methodical style that has often defined Gaelic football in recent years. St Loman’s played with immense determination and resilience throughout. Even after being reduced to 14 men, their defensive setup remained strong, and they showed a quick, direct attacking approach when the chances arose. Young talents like Mark Tunney and Riley Sheahan made significant contributions, while the seasoned experience of Shane Dempsey and John Heslin brought

leadership and composure at key moments. The combination of youthful energy and veteran know-how made for a well-rounded performance that bodies well for the season ahead.

while St Loman’s will be disappointed with the result, their performance was a positive sign for the season ahead.

ACFL Division 2:

St Lomans Mullingar 1-11 Tang 2-07

Our first league win of the year came last Tuesday night against Tang. A goal from Peter Foy and seven points from Chris Gilbert were crucial in victory. Well done lads

ACFL Division 4:

St Lomans Mullingar 0-11 Ballinagore 2-16

The Blues 3rd side were forced to make 7 changes from the side that played Shandonagh last week. Ballinagore were deserved winners in this 2nd round league fixture, however it’s fair to say that St. Lomans will be disappointed with their general display, especially their 2nd half display. There were some good performances from Senan Russell, Gerry Grehan, Jimmy Kelly, John Casey, Dano Fitzsimons and Niall Dowdall, but overall the Blues will be frustrated with the lack of execution of the most basic skills, kicking and hand passing. Next round sees us travel to Tyrrellspass for round 3.

Team; Callum Butler Dolan, Adam Brady, Senan Russell (c), Mark O’Gara, Gerry Grehan (0-1), Jimmy Kelly, John Casey (0-1), Dano Fitzsimons, Hugh Mulhearn, Eoghan Kenny, Niall Dowdall (0-2), Aaron Smyth, Adam O’Connor, Cian Daly (0-2) & Tristan Graham (0-4). Subs Used; Oisin Tyrrell & Byron Graham (0-1).
