St Lomans Mullingar Club Notes 16/12/2024:
Under 20 Boys Championship Final:
St Lomans Mullingar 1-09 Moate All Whites 3-08 AET
Last Saturday night the 2024 season came to an end in Kinnegad in typical December conditions. The bitter cold was quickly forgotten about with a fiercely competitive final between two good teams. The first half was a slow burner, Moate got the scoring underway with a long-rang free from Eoin Bracken. After this though the blues took over proceedings, and got the next three scores. Mikey Weir with the pick of the points, following a Daniel McCann double.
Bracken halved the deficit with another placed ball but three unanswered scores courtesy of McCann, Cillian Plunkett and an excellent Shane Mulderry point extended the lead. Four points separated the sides at the interval, a good showing from the Mullingar men who were reduced to fourteen for ten minutes following a black card. The Second half saw the all whites take charge in a complete role reversal. The lead was initially halved through Tadhg Heavin and Tobey Conteh before Lomans were once again reduced to fourteen after referee Barry Nea brandished another black card.
Conteh found the net for Moate four minutes from time and it looked as though they had snatched victory. However, Eoin Meehan had other ideas as he hit a stunning equaliser following a McCann turnover. The sides would go into extra time with the blues having played a third of the match with a man less. Meehan repeated the trick with the opening score of extra time but the opposition dominated the half and a quickfire 1-03 with points from Heavin, Conteh and Ronan Murray and a Conteh goal all but sealed the win for the all-whites.
Conteh added another score at the beginning of the second period to give his team a six-point lead. The Blues were given a life-line when substitute Nedas Bielicas scored a Seamus Darby- esque goal. It almost looked like there was to be a late comeback as Mark Tunney appeared to be fouled in the small square but play was waved away and Moate netted at the far end. Meehan hit a consolation free late on but ultimately Moate All Whites ran out deserved five point-winners.
Congratulations to Moate All Whites on the victory. Commiserations to our lads who showed great fighting spirit but unfortunately just fell short. Perhaps they were guilty of holding on to what they had in the second half rather than extending the lead, however it’s easy to say in hindsight. All that said, Alan Bracken’s team got absolutely no luck in terms of refereeing decisions. The most egregious one when Thomas Meehan was absolutely wiped out after a horror challenge in the middle of the second half. Somehow, referee and Linesman saw nothing wrong with the challenge.
On the night there were a number of good performers with Riley Sheahan, Ciaran Smyth, Cillian Plunkett and Sean Plunkett all impresseing. Eoin Meehan also had a great impact off the bench. Most impressive however, was Oisín O’Hara in the middle of the park, showing remarkably maturity for a minor. This team is absolutely full of talent and lads with brilliant attitudes who have bright futures ahead of them.
Finally thanks to the management team of Alan Bracken, David Geoghegan, Pat Layde and Tony Plunkett for looking after the team. Finally, thank you to all our supporters who have come out in force this year. 2024 has been an historic year for the club and hopefully 2025 can be another good one!
