St Lomans Mullingar Club Notes 17/06/2024:

ACFL Division 1:

St Lomans Mullingar 0-08 Tyrrellspass 0-08

Last Friday night our division one side faced Tyrrellspass in their final league match before the league final. This game had little meaning, as both sides knew their fate going in but it was a hard test for both teams and a competitive game of football ended in a stalemate, which was a fari result. Despite both sides being short several key players, it gave us a look at these two teams in action before they face off in the senior championship later in the summer.

The blues face the all-conquering Coralstown kinngead in the league final on the last weekend of June, with date, time and venue to be confirmed.

ACFL Division 3:

St Lomans Mullingar 1-15 Kilbeggan Shamrocks 0-11

Last Thursday evening our division three side ended their campaign on a high with a good win in Kilbeggan. The Blues elected to play against a notable breeze in the first half, and the first quarter saw the teams trade three points each. Chris Gilbert, David Morgan and Ryan Jones all opened their accounts for the Saints. Further scores from Gilbert and Morgan increased the visitors’ advantage. Kilbeggan responded with a point from a placed ball before a purple patch for the away side.

Fola Ayorinde and Shane Mulderry both pointed either side of a Gilbert free. Adam Carroll’s side were then in further control after a brilliant ball from Conor Regan found Tristan Graham, who expertly rounded the keeper and finished to the net. The home side responded with a pair of placed balls either side of a Graham point to see the Mullingar men lead by six at the interval.

The second half saw the hosts kick the first four points of the half and suddenly from a position of strength, Lomans looked shaken and had it not been for a brilliant save by Dano Fitzsimons, Kilbeggan could have taken the lead. However, all credit must go  to our lads though who responded with three consecutive points courtesy of Cillian Plunkett, Fola Ayorinde and a Daniel McCann free.

Plunkett’s long-range score from play was arguably the score of the match. Kilbeggan responded but it was in vein as the blues closed the victory out with the last three scores coming from a David Morgan double and a fine score from substitute Mark Tunney. A win by eight points was probably the fair outcome with Lomans playing excellent football at times but also with some sloppy periods to match.

Nathan Lally, Ethan Brown, Riley Sheahan and Ciaran Smyth all performed excellently in defence. Daniel McCann, Fola Ayorinde and David Morgan pulled the strings up front and were instrumental in the win. Any of these players could be argued for player of the match but in this case, the accolade goes to Fola Ayorinde who showed a great work-rate and was involved in everything Lomans did well.

A good end to the year for Adam Carroll’s men in division three who at the time of writing still have an outside chance at promotion. However, this is far more unlikely after St Joseph’s narrow victory over Killucan at the weekend. The Blues need Bunbronsa to do them a favour and beat St Joseph’s in their final game, which looks unlikely judging by their league position, but ultimately you never know. Regardless, division three is a great breeding bround for young players and a foundation for our junior championship side, and has been another successful year in 2024.
