St Lomans Mullingar Club Notes 13/05/2024:
ACFL Ladies Division 1:
St Lomans Mullingar 1-14 Milltown 0-07
Our senior ladies travelled to Milltown last Wednesday night with both sides having one hundred per cent records up that point. The hosts have an extremely strong home record and were unbeaten in their home ground in Westmeath for several years. The hosts started strong as they typically do, hitting the first two scores. Katie Kilmurray settled any of the visitors’ nerves after ten minutes with a routine free and after this the blues never looked back.
Katie Kilmurray put the blues in front after scoring the only goal of the game, which she finished well after receiving an awkward pass. The Saints added further scores through Meabh O’Hara and another Kilmurray free. Milltown responded with a point of their own before the away side rallied to kick five unanswered points courtesy of Ciara Blundell, Katie Kilmurray, Laura Murphy, Meabh O’Hara and Shannon Breslin. At the half time whistle the Mullingar side were eight points to the good.
The second half was a more even affair with both sides trading three scores each in their period, the blues’ scores coming via Shannon Breslin, Katie Kilmurray and Ciara Blundell. Grainne Byrne responded for the hosts who looked to rally for a late comeback with ten minutes to play but it was actually Lomans that finished the stronger. The final three scores coming from Katie Kilmurray, Ciara Blundell and Laura Murphy, which saw Ciaran Kilmurray’s side, run out ten-point winners.
The saints brought a ferocious intensity which was too much for the defending county champions to deal with on the night. This result should give the blues huge belief for the year ahead. The only caveat is both sides were short a number of key players away on county duty, so the line-ups will likely differ when the championship comes around. Nevertheless, the next meeting between the pair will be an interesting one.
It was a complete team performance on the night with some excellent individual displays. Keelie Mulderry, Julie McLaughlin, Eve Scally and Megan Ennis excelled at the back. Meabh O’Hara was superb on her return. The half forward-line was probably the key however as the trio of Ciara Blundell, Katie Kilmurray and Laura Murphy put in phenomenal work and also contributed on the scoreboard.
Coming into the final round of the league, the table see’s St Lomans Mullingar top of the group with St Mary’s Rochfortbridge and Milltown levelled in second place. St Mary’s visit Lakepoint Park in the final round, a result for the home side would see them reach a league final. However, a victory for St Mary’s would likely see them in the final so it’s all to play for.
