Condolences:
St Lomans Mullingar wish to extend our most sincere condolences to the Gilligan family following the passing of Tony Gilligan, (Culleendarragh, Multyfarnham and late of Hillside Drive, Mullingar)
Tony began as a trainee Psychiatric nurse in 1956. He served as the club secretary as well as playing, when St Lomans mental hospital became county champions in 1961 for only the second team, after previously being beaten in the 1957 and 1958 finals.
Further success came in 1961 and 63. In that great spell of dominance the club won practically every accolade available including championships, leagues feis cups Roseland cup
Tony togged out for the maroon and white of Westmeath in the 1960s several times.
Following his playing career he took up the whistle and officiated at countless games at all levels.
In 1969 he took over as county secretary from fellow club man Paddy Flanagan after previously serving as assistant secretary for many years. He held the position for 8 years until being succeeded by another Lomans man, Paddy Collins.
He also had a great love of hurling and was appointed as one of the four secretaries of Colaiste Iomana, where he travelled the county promoting hurling at all levels.
In his later years he took great pride in the success of St Lomans Mullingar at all levels, especially witnessing seven county champions in eleven years.
Above all of these achievements and his work for the club he will always be remembered as a gentleman and will be dearly missed.
