Tinryland 1-14 Rathvilly 1-6
Tinryland senior footballers made the best possible start to the new season when they comfortably accounted for Rathvilly at Rathcrogue on Friday evening.
Lining out with a mixture of youth and experience under new manager John Nolan last years beaten Co finallists playing an attractive brand of football were first off the mark in the 9th minute when Cormac O’Brien pointed after possession was won by Shane Redmond. Rathvilly replied in the 12th minute when Eoghan O’Connor -Byrne converted from a mark and it was the 17th minute before the next point arrived for Rathvilly from their wing forward Ryan Sibbald. The Wicklow border teams lead was short lived as a well struck Diarmaid Walshe free in the 18th minute levelled matters and the home side were back in front 7 minutes later when Mark Lawlor lofted over a great point after good play by Mickey Hosey, Cormac O’Brien and Conor Ryan.
Great play by the youthful Sean Murphy and Diarmaid Walshe resulted in another quality score from midfielder Luke Broderick and when O’Brien set up Mark Lawlor for another point in the 27th minute Tinryland had stretched into a 3 point advantage.
The closing score of the half fell to Rathvilly who attacked the Tinryland defence and won a free converted by Ryan Sibbald. Half time score Tinryland 0-5 Rathvilly 0-3
On the resumption Rathvilly with 2 pairs of fresh legs introduced in Rory Gavin and Senan Molloy, rocked Tinryland back to reality when Jake Elliott burst through the home defence and crashed the ball past the returning home goalie Ciaran Byrne. Tinryland did not panic after this reverse however and two quick points from Niall Lowry after good play by Luke Broderick and a Matthew O’Toole beauty restored the home team’s advantage. Rathvilly replied to equalise again via Conor O’Neill but with the game entering the final quarter Diarmaid Walshe restored the Tinryland lead with another well struck free. It got even better then for the men in blue and white when recently introduced sub. Jamie Walker slotted the ball past Rathvilly goalie Regan Murphy after brilliant play by Diarmaid Walshe and Niall Lowry. The closing stages of this well contested game saw fresh legs introduced for Tinryland in Bobby Doyle, Sam Byrne, and Conall McGuire with the latter also getting on the scoresheet in the 58th minute after Tinryland had stretched their lead further with 2 well taken Cormac O’Brien points. The final scores of this enjoyable game saw Padraig Bolger score a consolation point for Rathvilly with Diarmaid Walsh bringing the Tinryland scoring to a conclusion with another well converted point on the stroke of full time.
Tinryland who had 8 different scorers had fine performers in senior newcomers Matthew Gleeson, Sean Murphy Luke Broderick together with experienced players Danny Moran, Mikey Hosey, Cormac O’brien, Paddy Regan and Diarmaid Walshe. For Rathvilly Barry John Molloy, Padraig Bolger, Ryan Sibbald, Jake Elliott and Eoghan O’Connor-Byrne stood out. Tinryland will be away to Old Leighlin in next weeks round of games while Rathvilly will host Palatine in Fr. Ryan Park.
