Tinryland 0-9 Kildavin-Clonegal 0-8
Tinryland U20’s made heavy weather of this 3rd round game before emerging with a one point win against a determined Kildavin/Clonegal side at Rathcrogue on Saturday 9th December.
In a game dominated by the remnants of storm Erin Tinryland elected to play against the wind in the first half. The opening score came after 4 minutes when Mark Mullen slotted over a point after excellent play by one of Tinrylands best players Vivian Nixon. Sixty seconds later Kildavin centre forward Luke Devlin converted a free before Cillian Fagan did likewise for the home side after good play by Luke Broderick. The sides were back level again by the 9th minute when Daniel Croinin pointed before Fagan restored the Tinryland lead with a point in the 10th minute. Kildavin corner forward Matthew Skelly had the sides level again for the 3rd time when he slotted over a point which saw Tinryland respond with a great Luke Broderick score at the half way stage of the opening half after good play by Cillian Fagan. Kildavin with wind advantage were back level again by the 18th minute with a point from Daniel Cronin and the men from the banks of the Slaney then edged ahead for the first time with a well taken Jake Nolan point followed by another from Daniel Cronin. Half time score Kildavin-Clonegal 0-6 Tinryland 0-4.
The 2nd half began with Tinryland ringing the changes introducing Conor Carew and Terry Cassidy into the fray and it was Carew who made an immediate impact with a point after 15 seconds following a pin point pass by Cillian Fagan. This score should have been the cue for Tinryland to kick on with wind advantage but remarkably it took another 20 minutes for either team to register a score when Carew levelled matters for the 6th time with a brilliant point. Tinryland then took the lead when recently introduced sub. Robbie Fitzgerald raised a white flag but back came Kildavin-Clonegal to level matters once again with a point from their centre forward Luke Devlin. A number of stoppages then followed with Kildavin losing their midfielder Alex Callaghan to a head injury while Tinryland lost their defender Matthew Gleeson to a nasty shoulder injury. These stoppages resulted in over 10 minutes of injury time and it was during this period of play that Tinryland finally edged ahead with points in the 64th and 68th minutes from Kyle Holden and Cillian Fagan. As referee Damien Brady continued to allow play to continue Kildavin-Clonegal went in search of a winning goal and they were very unlucky not to get one when Daniel Cronins deflection went inches over the bar with almost the last play of the game.
Outstanding for the winners were Conall and Cian McGuire, Vivian Nixon, Mark Mullen, Cillian Fagan, Michael Hosey and sub. Conor Carew.
