St Lomans GAA Club Notes 03/04/2023:

ACFL Division 1:

St Lomans Mullingar 1-09 The Downs 0-10

Last Friday night saw a repeat of the 2022 Senior Championship final as we welcomed The Downs to Home Instead Lakepoint Park. Conditions were difficult after two days of heavy rain. Before the game a minute’s silence was held for the late Jimmy Corroon, all at St Lomans wish the Corroon family and The Downs GAA our deepest condolences, ar dheis de go raibh a anam.

The visitors got the scoring underway through Ciaran Nolan before the Blues responded with points from TJ Cox and Shane Dempsey. The Black and Amber regained the lead with points from Ian Martin and Jack Carroll before the hosts netted through TJ Cox. Cox was found well by Shane Dempsey, Cox then beat his man and after a beautiful dummy outfoxed the goalkeeper and tapped the ball home for what proved to be the only goal of the game. The Sides traded two points each before the interval with Cox and Dempsey on target once more to leave two between the teams at half time.

Both sides continued to exchange blows each with Cox and Dempsey once again on the scoresheet to cancel out a pair of points from Luke Loughlin. Conor Regan put the Saints three clear before they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Tristan Graham, however Downs goalkeeper Senan O’Driscoll saved well from Shane Dempsey. The Blues didn’t panic though and Peter Foy made it a two score game heading into the last ten minutes. Luke Loughlin then hit a marvellous point to reduce the deficit before Ryan Jones responded at the other end for Paddy Dowdall’s men. Two injury time frees from Loughlin made it a two-point game but Damien Maher blew the full-time whistle to see the hosts claim the two points.

A super win for the Mullingar side who keep their unbeaten record in the league. A good collective performance no doubt, but individually the likes of Darragh O’Keefe, Conor O’Donoghue, Oisín Hogan, Rory Sheahan and Enda Gaffney all performing particularly well.  O’Donoughue was perhaps the pick of the bunch, putting in another huge performance.

Team; Jason Daly, Oisín Hogan, Darragh O’Keefe, Gerry Grehan, Conor O’Donoughue, David Whelan, Eoghan Hogan, Ryan Jones (0.01), Enda Gaffney, Rory Sheahan, Conor Regan (0.01), Tristan Graham, Shane Dempsey (0.03, 0.1f), Peter Foy (0.01), TJ Cox (1.04, 0.01f). Subs used; Eoghan O’Keefe, Chris Gilbert, Seanie Dinnegan.

ACFL Division 3:

St Lomans Mullingar 2-08 The Downs 1-09

On Sunday morning St Lomans made the short trip down the N4 to renew acquittances with the Downs 48 hours after their victory in division 1 against the same opposition. Both sides matched each other blow for blow in the early stages hitting four points each, the visitors’ scores coming from Paddy Dowdall, Cian Daly and a double from Conan O’Hara.

Daniel McCann put the Blues in front with a well improvised score before moments later finding the net, McCann was quickest to react when Chris Gilbert’s effort was palmed away and the former fisted into the back of the net to give the saints some breathing space. Both teams exchanged a point each before the interval with O’Hara on target once more from a placed ball.

Donal Coughlan opened the scoring in the second half for the hosts before Chris Gilbert cancelled it out at the other end. The Black and amber hit a quickfire 1-02 in the third quarter to take the lead and when Robbie Kenny’s men were reduced to fourteen men with fifteen minutes remaining it looked ominous for the visitors. However, the blues found the net for the second time, similarly to first Rory Sheahan’s effort dropped short and Tadhg Kenny was on hand to fist the ball into the Downs net.

With ten minutes to play Lomans were dealt another blow after a second player was dismissed and were reduced to thirteen men. Despite the numerical deficit our lads put in a trojan effort to reduce The Downs to a single point and held on for a hard fought two points.

Another great win which sees us remain at the right end of the table in Division 3, to match our division 1 side. The Hogan brothers Oisín and Eoghan continued their excellent performances, not to mention Seanie Dinnegan and Eoghan O’Keefe who put in another great shift. Oisín Hogan was arguably the player of the match with an assured performance in the middle of the park.

Team; Rory Matthews, Daire Smyth, Seanie Dinnegan, Eoghan Hogan, Ciaran Smyth, Andrew Daly, Seanie Bracken, Oisín Hogan, Paddy Dowdall (0.01), Cian Daly (0.01), Chris Gilbert (0.01), Eoghan O’Keefe, Daniel McCann (1.01), Conan O’Hara (0.03, 0.03f), Tadhg Kenny (1.00). Subs used; Rory Sheahan, Adam Lynch, Shane Mulderry.
