ACFL Div 5
Athlone v Ballycomoyle
Athlone’s Junior team maintained their 100% record in Division 5 of the ACFL with a 10 point win over a combative Ballycomoyle side on Friday night. Athlone started well and raced into a 1-7 to 0-1 lead by the 25th minute, following a succession of superb scores from Joe Fallon (0-4), Seamus Byrne (1-1) and Andy Lynam (0-2). However, a late Ballycomoyle rally saw them score 1-2 to leave the half-time score 1-7 to 1-3 in favour of Athlone.
Athlone started the 2nd half well again and added two points from Jordan Marshment and Joe Fallon, before Ballycomoyle were reduced to 14 men following a red card. Despite this, Ballycomoyle refused to yield and with 10 minutes remaining, Athlone’s lead was just 1-11 to 1-7, the extra points coming from Eamon Martin and Charlie McMickan. Fortunately, Athlone were spared a nervous finish to the game when Jordan Marshment won a penalty after a typical surging run. Charlie McMickan coolly dispatched the spot-kick to the net to finally end Ballycomoyle’s resistance and Athlone added three further points from Joe Fallon, Richie Greene and Glenn Costello to run out winners by 2-14 to 1-7.
This was another fine victory in this division for a very young Athlone side who kicked some top quality scores, but who also showed great discipline against very physical opponents.

Teams: Athlone v Kilbeggan/St Joseph's
Venue: Pairc Chiarain
Competition: U16 Girls Championship
Date: 8th April 2014
Athlone U16 girls completed the group stages of the championship with an exciting two point victory over Kilbeggan/St Joseph's at Pairc Chiarain on Tuesday last 8th April. As the visitors only had 13 players the game was reduced to 13 players aside but all 13 were good footballers and they started very brightly. They used the wind to their advantage and were scoring at will amassing a half time total of 2-8. Meanwhile Athlone could not get going but did score two goals through Brionna Geoghegan and Lauren O'Connor and a point from Lauryn Mitchell. The half time score was 2-8 to 2-1. The second half commenced with the visitors scoring another goal and a point to move 11 points clear. However after 10 minutes of the half Athlone re-discovered their game and increased the pace significantly and the visitors could not cope with the pressure. Two points from Niamh Byrne followed by another from Chloe Moran and a goal from Ciara Egan brought the deficit to 5 points. The visitors regained control for a short period of time to score 3 points but after that Athlone took complete control. Ciara Egan and Brionna Geoghegan scored points and Niamh Byrne scored a goal. Then Ciara and Niamh scored points to leave Athlone two points down with 5 minutes remaining. Despite intense pressure we could not get the scores and kicked 3 wides. However with almost the last kick of the game Lauryn Mitchell scored a goal to win the match for Athlone. The girls are undefeated in the championhship and finished top of their group and now await their semi-final opponents. Tremendous credit goes to the whole panel for the manner in which they fought back from a seemingly impossible position to snatch the win.
