U15 Davy Allen Memorial Tournament 2013

Despite the monsoon like conditions that prevailed on Sunday last, the hardy souls who were in attendance in Pairc Chiarain were treated to a great day’s entertainment and no little skill in the annual U15 Davy Allen Memorial Tournament. Restricted to four teams for 2013 due to county finals in neighbouring counties, the teams that took to the pitch were the home team, Caulry, Ballycumber/Tubber, and Garrycastle. They say that the weather is a great leveller and so it proved as there was very little to choose between the teams following the round robin section. However, it was the boys from the Faithful County who finished with a perfect record followed by Athlone then Garrycastle and Caulry.

This pitched Garrycastle against Caulry in the plate final and playing against the very strong wind in the first half it was the Garrycastle boys who showed the greater ability to retain possession and take crucial scores and went in ahead at the break before pulling away in the second moiety. It was a fitting curtain raiser for what was to come in the Cup final.

The final saw an Offaly Westmeath playoff and given that Ballycumber/Tubber had prevailed by the bare minimum in the league section, a tight game was expected and we were not to be disappointed with the final going to extra time after the two periods of 15 minutes couldn’t separate these two gallant teams. It was end to end stuff and following 5 matches the pitch was starting to cut up but it was to the credit of both teams that they continued to play football as it should be played. There were some excellent scores taken and the high fielding and distribution by both sides was exceptional but by the time Niall Ward blew his whistle for the final time it was the home team who had prevailed and retained the Davy Allen Memorial Cup. It was a very poignant moment to see Tara Allen make the presentation to Athlone captain Daniel Reid with Tara & Davy’s son Shane, a member of the victorious team. Davy would have been proud of them all.

On behalf of Athlone GAA and the Allen family, we wish to offer sincere thanks to the teams for making the effort in such inclement conditions. Congratulations to the Athlone lads and a special mention to John Martin and Liam Downes for overseeing the success, referees Richie Daly, Niall Ward and Dobsey Prendergast, chef Denis O’Sullivan and his assistants too numerous to name, Padraig Devaney for the photos and last but not least, Jim Rigney for organising the event. Well done to all concerned.
