U16 County Final
Athlone 1-09 The Downs 5-12
For the third time in four years our U16s took to the field on the last day of the year at the U16 grade. However, on an unseasonably warm day in Rochfortbridge the lads played second fiddle to an excellent outfit from the Downs. On the day it wasn’t to be for this very talented group of footballers and despite the defeat there was plenty to be proud of as the way the lads kept going to the final whistle was a credit to themselves and their club. Great praise and thanks go to the mentors of this team who put in a serious amount of work this year and the pride in the jersey displayed by the lads is down to their efforts. Well done Richie Daly, Joe Fallon, John Martin & Jim Rigney.

As to the match itself the lads played with a strong wind in the first half, but were slow out of the traps and struggled to get their normal passing game going. The Downs team settled better and got to grips with the game early on. The Downs led early but Athlone seemed to find their feet by kicking 1-3 to lead but that was as good as it got for the lads as The Downs raised two green flags in the first half, the second of which was the last kick of the half and put them one point up at the break. The timing of the goal seemed to sap the confidence out of Athlone as they prepared to face the wind in the second period. There was a palpable air of anxiety among the Athlone followers at half time but in fairness to the lads they put in a good shift in the opening quarter of the half but as the old saying goes, goals win matches and The Downs scored three in the second half and ran out worthy winners. This was the first real defeat for this group of players having won the Feile and U14 Championship two years ago and the U15 Championship last year and as was said on Saturday night, they don’t become bad players overnight and this setback will hopefully lead to the lads redoubling their efforts for the Minor Championship in 2014.

The Athlone panel was: Fabian Cooke, Conor Devaney, Josh Dolan, Michael Doolan, Fionn Dowd, Sean Dowd, Conal Edmundson, Ryan Gaffey, Richie Greene, Sean Keena, Benny Martin, Diarmuid Martin, Kevin Martin, Conor Melinn, Sam Omukoro, Tadhg Prendergast, Daniel Reid, Kieran Rigney, Jack Ruane, Cathal Stacey, Robert Teape & Dylan Temple.
