U14s Div 1 Champsionship Semi Final Sunday 11am in Ballymore; Athlone v Millmore Gaels

U14 Girls County Final Group D

Hard luck to our Athlone U14 Girls in the Group D final on Saturday against Clann Gaels. With five minutes to go we led by two points, but a free kick to Clann Gaels that came off the upright was finished to the net.

Immediately after we conceded a 2nd goal from the kickout that they didn’t recover from.  Some great performances by all our players in a this very competitive game, the girls gave it everything but luck wasn't on their side. Final score 6-5 to 4-6

U10 Clann na nGael Tournament

Our u9/u10 squad made the short trip to Johnstown on Saturday last to compete in the Clann Tournament. 12 teams from Dublin, Sligo, Galway, Westmeath and Roscommon put on a fantastic display of football in what was a superbly competitive competition. Athlone were pitted against Fingallians (Dublin), Roscommon Gaels (Roscommon) and St Brigids (Roscommon). 3 groups games followed for both the u9 and u10 teams. The u10s held a 100% record in the group stages topping their group with the u9s winning two and drawing one to also top their group. The semi-finals of the Cup competitions followed with the u10s facing locals Padraig Pearses and the u9s up against Fingallians. The u10s were narrowly pipped after extra time by the eventual winners Padraig Pearses, where our u9’s lost out to a stronger Fingallians side. The lads put on a superb display of tacking, blocking and teamwork throughout the day and were a credit to their coaches. A big thanks to Clann na nGael for a great day out for all our players and also to their hard work and dedication in organising it. Well done to all involved.

Nursery Training

Football for boys and girls in our nursery programme finished on Sunday last with a great turnout where all players received their end of year medals. This was a great way to finish off a very enjoyable season of football for this group of players. We would to thank all the parents for bringing the kids down week in week out and we look forward to them all returning next year again to Athlone GAA club. A big thanks to all the coaches for their fantastic help throughout the year and all parents and helpers who served teas, coffees and treats on Sunday last.
