Leinster club quarter final.
Athlone 2-10 St Mary's, Ardee (Louth) 1-11.
Congratulations to our minor boys who qualified for the semi-final of the Eire Óg Leinster minor club tournament with a hard fought two point win over Louth champions St. Mary's of Ardee in Carlow on Sunday morning. Athlone were first off the mark through Kieran Colclough and the same player then slotted his customary '45 soon after before St. Mary's got off the mark with their opening score. Athlone went further ahead through Luke Kelly, Josh Beaumont and another Colclough '45 but a barren spell followed as St. Mary's found their feet to draw level, however another Beaumont point sent Athlone in with a one-point lead at half time, 0-06 to 0-05.
St. Mary's opened the second half scoring to draw level, before Athlone struck for their first goal when a brilliant team move involving a series of one-twos between Diarmuid Martin, JJ Offorjama and Josh Beaumont set up Kieran Colclough for a tap-in after two minutes. St Mary's then had a man sent off for striking off the ball. A point from JJ Offorjama and another brilliant team goal, finished by Josh Beaumont looked to have athlone home and dry with 10 minutes to play. St. Mary's to their credit didn't throw the towel in and battled back scoring 1-4. Crucially however, Athlone scored three points of their own in this period, through Shane Allen, Colclough and Beaumont to hold on for a two-point win on a scoreline of 2-10 to 1-11. Best on the day were Paddy Ryan, Luke Kelly, Josh Beaumont and Kieran Colclough. Thanks to Eire Óg, Carlow for organising the tournament and having their pitch in such fine condition at this time of the year.
Next up for Athlone is a semi-final against Fenagh from Carlow date & time tbc, again at the Eire Óg club grounds in Carlow, and hopefully plenty of supporters will be able to make the journey to support the lads.
