SFC Quarter-Final Replay

Congrats to our Seniors who pulled off a great comeback to beat Mullingar Shamrocks in the Qtr Final Replay by 2-9 to 1-10. Well done lads. #UpTheBlue

Nursery

The curtain came down on another excellent year for our Under 6 boys and girls when they received their well-deserved medals and treats following their final training session of the year on a beautiful sunny Sunday morning last. There was a great turnout on the day and it was very encouraging to see the ballroom full of very happy Athlone gaels. The future would appear to be very bright, if enthusiasm and fun is any barometer. We cannot let the day pass without offering our sincere thanks to the mentors for this group namely; Dave Clarke, Joe Fallon, John McGlynn, Kate O'Connell, Paul O'Connell and Shauna Moylan. They are there, without fail, every Sunday morning and make sure that the children get to play in a fun and safe environment. Enjoy the winter rest and we’ll hopefully see ye in March!

Under 8 Boys

Our Under 8 Boys had their final game of the season against Erin Rovers of Doon, Co. Offaly on a beautiful sunny afternoon in Pairc Chiarain. It was great to see the young players showing off all their skills learned during the year and they were was the added bonus of a bottle of juice and packet of crisps for our weary warriors after the final whistle. The lads have had a great year and have come on in leaps and bounds under the excellent instruction of Dave Kelly and Aidan Mitchell. Many thanks lads for your hard work and commitment during the year with great help from Jake Kelly.

As last Sunday was the final day for most of the “Sunday morning” groups David O’Connell, our Minor Board Secretary, took the opportunity to make a small presentation to Ray Connellan on behalf of the younger members of the club, prior to Ray’s departure for Australia. Ray embodies all that is good in the GAA as, from the age of 16, he was always available to step in and ref an u8 / u10 game and as his national profile grew through representing Westmeath and Athlone with such distinction, his sense of club was not diminished and he would happily take underage training sessions or make visits to schools to promote our club. He is a credit to his family and his club and the Minor Board will be sad to lose him but our loss is St Kilda’s gain and we wish him the very best of luck in his future career.

Under 10 Boys

Our under 10s have had their season prolonged thanks to qualifying for the A final of the Tormey’s Clann na nGael U10 tournament. The final is fixed for 8pm on Thursday the 6th in Johnstown and we wish the lads the best of luck. We encourage anyone that is available to make the short trip to cheer on this very talented and hard working bunch.

Under 12 Boys

Another hard working group of players who are still donning the blue in October is our under 12 boys who have completed the group stages of the U12 Jim McHugh Memorial Tournament. The lads have played five games, winning three, drawing one and losing one over the past five weeks. They are awaiting the results of the other group games to see when their semi final is due. Well done lads and keep up the good work.

A special word of thanks as always to our resident photographer Padraig Devaney.
