PHELIM MURPHY RIP
Is údar mór brón do CLG na Gaillimhe an scéala go bhfuil ár n-iar Rúnaí Iomána Contae Phelim Murphy imithe ar shlí na firínne.
Phelim had a lifelong involvement in the GAA, serving as Chairperson of his club Turloughmore GAA, as an officer of Galway GAA Hurling Board and also Connacht Council.
He served as Galway Hurling Secretary with distinction for 23 years, during his term of office he was challenged on two occasions but such was his popularity that he won both contests comfortably.
Among the highlights of his term in office were the back-to-back All Ireland Senior Hurling titles won in 1987 and 1988. Cyril Farrell was the manager when Galway won their three All-Irelands in the eighties with Phelim Murphy and Bernie O'Connor being his selectors. There are many memorable moments from his career and among those which will stand out will be his house under virtual siege from fans as they made pleas to get All-Ireland tickets.
He also served a three year term as President of the Connacht Council at the same time when Joe McDonagh was President of the GAA another highlight in his involvement with the association.
On behalf of Sarsfields GAA, we express our deepest sympathies to his wife Nellie, his sons PJ, Tony, Jody, Phelim, Martin, Brendan, his daughters Marina, Dolly, Patricia, Cassie, Helen, Majella, Sally, Ruth and Christine, his grandchildren, great grandchildren, sister Kitty and extended family members on his passing. He will be sadly missed by his family, friends and the whole Galway GAA community.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.
