Boyne RFC Bar is open again and is operating Thursday to Sunday 7pm -10.30pm Hopefully we will see you down in the bar for a pint. Be sure to say hi to our barman Tadhg or Tiger as he is affectionately known (Tadhg is also a senior player with Boyne RFC)

Pitch Development It has been a very positive couple of weeks for sports people across the country with the return to sporting activities, and in particular for our club as All teams returned training at under-age level and adult rugby. The outlook for a competitive season in 21/22 is very positive. As Chairman of the Executive Committee I am proud that Boyne RFC provides Rugby playing facilities, coaching and mentoring to the youth and adult population in Drogheda and surrounding ares. In our short history Boyne RFC has produced notable Irish International and provincial stars such as Grace Davitt, Shane Horgan, Vicki McGinn, Mark McHugh, Shane Monahan and Niall Ronan. In addition, a great number of our players have represented Ireland and Leinster at youth international and provincial level.

Today Boyne RFC’s catchment area covers both Louth and Meath and caters for upwards of 350 boys and girls youth and mini’s rugby players. In addition we have almost 200 adult members involved in the club, playing across four adult teams and associated club supporters. Our facilities are also made available to St Ita’s school and Praxis Care facility, both on site on our grounds in Shamrock Lodge.

With such huge numbers involved, the pressure on the clubs facilities is immense and something we strive to improve on a continual basis. In 2011 we set out a plan to improve the playing facilities at Shamrock Lodge and our first all-weather playing surface, fully floodlit to match playing standard was completed in April 2012, with a floodlit training area and fully equipped gym added more recently.  As agreed at last year’s AGM we now need to continue this development of the grounds to allow for the ‘army’ of youths and mini players to play at their home ground of Shamrock Lodge. Therefore, the Plans for the next stage of development include state-of-the-art artificial all-weather playing surfaces and associated floodlighting.

Phase one of the development involves the construction of a new artificial playing area, 54m*35m, with associated lighting and surrounds; Pitch1 in the attached drawings. Phase two will see the transformation of Pitch2 to an artificial surface with full floodlighting and Phase 3 the construction of Pitch4 artificial training area. There is also the possibility to add a fifth pitch in a later Phase. We have applied for planning permission for all of the above Pitch development and we will also seek planning permission to extend the current dressing room facilities and retention of the gym constructed a number of years ago.

If the proposed planning application is approved, the club would seek Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) approval to list Boyne RFC as a centre of excellence for the North East of Ireland. If this status can be achieved by the club, it will mean that Leinster North East rugby players will train in Drogheda and our players and their parents will not have to travel to other counties to further their development.

As you would expect these improvements come at a significant cost to the club; high level estimates are as follows:

  • Pitch 1 - €140,000
  • Pitch 2 - €650,000
  • Pitch 4 - €87,500
  • Dressing room extension €125,000

Therefore we will look to undertake a number of fund raising efforts over the upcoming months and years. If you are available to support our current initiatives in any way, I and the Committee would appreciate your full support and are available to discuss at any time.

Yours in Rugby,

Chairman  Alan O’Reilly  & Hon Sec  Jeremy O'Callaghan
