GAA County Nicknames:
Laois: “The O’Moore County”
This hidden corner of Ireland is often overlooked, not least because they’ve only had one All-Ireland win (and that was over a century ago).
Laois’s nickname offers a view into its rich ancient past: The O’Moores were a famous Laois family whose ruined fortress can still be seen at Dunamase Castle.
Groaner of the Week:
During WWII in North Africa an army platoon became detached from their unit in the desert. For three day and nights they waited for help until all their food supplies were exhausted. In desperation they sent out one soldier to explore the wilderness and report back as to whether there was any hope of food. The soldier returned the next day. “There’s good news and bad news,” he told the starving troops. “The bad news is, there is only camel dung out there to eat. The good news is, there’s plenty of it.”
Riddle of the Week:
I can be cracked. I can be made. I can be told. I can be played. What am I?
Seanfhocail na Seachtain:
“Buail an t-iarann fadis atá sé te.”
Strike the iron whie it is hot.
This or That:
Pick between the two items below and see if you’re right.
Adjusting for inflation, how much money would someone have needed in the year 1700 to be as rich as a millionaire in 2023: €5,900 or €89,000.
On This Day: On this day in 1927 Celtic Park is opened in Belfast.
Brain Teaser:
You are in a place called Wally’s World and there is only one law. There is a mirror, but no reflection. There is pizza with cheese, but not sausage. There is pepper, but no salt. There is a door, yet no entrance or exit. What is the law?
Focal na Seachtain:
In focal na seachtain I have included a word or phrase that you can try and bring into your speech during the week to help build up the ‘cupla focal.’
“An ndéanfaidh tú gar dom?”
“Would you do me a favour?”
Answers to this week’s puzzles:
Riddle of the Week: A joke
