Slaney opened the scoring on 14 minutes when a clever lob from Colm O Connor caused havoc in the home defence with Dominic Byrne capitalising following a mix-up between `keeper and defender. Stephen Farrell forced a good save from the home `keeper on 31 minutes to leave it 0-1 at the break. A super header from Paddy Farrell on 51 minutes after he got on the end of a pin-point cross from Eoin Curran made it 0-2. Balto`s were always dangerous from set pieces and within ten minutes they had reduced the arrears from a free-kick. The home side were on top and pushing for an equaliser, but Brandon Ryan finished off some fine build-up play between Daniel O`Brien and Michael Foley and a close range finish from Conor O`Brien at the end for 1-4 and now await the draw for the second round of the Shield. Carlow Juvenile league kicks off this Saturday with the U14`s taking on Vale Wanderers Black in Leighlinbridge at 10am. Slaney Rovers are hoping to enter an under 21 team into division 2 of the Carlow league. Anyone genuinely interested only, please contact any Committee member as club need to know ASAP as league kicks off next week.
