On 23rd May 2014 Kilmainhamwood took on Cortown in Junior ‘A’ Group B Round 3. Both teams headed into this game Friday night last played in Carnaross knowing a victory for either side would put that team one foot into the quarter-finals, and it was Cortown who came out one point victors at the end of a tight affair. It was Kilmainhamwood who made the brighter start with a point from a Stephen Kiernan free and a David Russell effort was well saved by the Cortown keeper, but Cortown responded in blistering form by kicking 2-01 in quick secession.
The ‘Wood has another goal chance but it was the post that saved Cortown this time around from a potential Kiernan goal. Kilmainhamwood kept fighting and outscored Cortown six points to three, going into half time Cortown lead 2-04 to 0-07. The ‘Wood points came from three Kiernan efforts, two from David Russell and one from Padriag Owens.
The ’Wood made two changes at half-time one each in attack and defense with the introduction of veteran Ray Magee and David Dolan at the expense of Padraig Owens and Bernard Bennett. Cortown kicked the first of the second half via a free but again the ‘Wood responded well with three successive points, two from Kiernan and one from Micheal Shankey. During this period of attach Kilmainhamwood again kit the post via a Damien Russell effort. This cut Cortowns lead to one.
But as the saying goes ‘goals wins games’, and this was the case, as Cortown’s early first half goals left Kilmainhamwood chasing the game from the off. But midway through the second half they did draw the match after Cortown went two in the lead, another Kiernan free and a fine point from substitute Alan Carolan leveled the affair. But the ‘Wood simply did not have enough in the tank to finish Cortown off as they kicked the next three scores to go three up, but the ‘Wood ran out of time to respond as they only managed two Kiernan frees in the last couple of minutes to cut Cortown’s winning margin to a point.
Final score Kilmainhamwood 0-14 Cortown 2-09
Best for the ‘Wood was Philip Moran, Sean Mulligan and Stephen Kiernan.
