Our Intermediates travelled to Aran Islands last Saturday for their opening league game in Division 3. After the long boat trip over from Rossaveal to Inis Mór, followed by a short bus journey to Páirc Éinne, windy conditions greeted our group of players and supporters. The first ten minutes of the game were tight and the teams were level until Aran hit the net twice in quick succession, they grew in confidence and stretched their lead to 8 points after 20 minutes. Their tackling was tigerish and we had no answer to their hunger for the ball. We did manage to stem the tide somewhat before half time but still trailed 2-5 to 0-5 at the break. An early Alan Meenaghan point from the throw in had the gap down to 5 but this was as close as we were to get to the islanders as they stretched their lead through a string of frees. The game was over as a contest midway through the second half, Aran running out 2-15 to 0-10 winners. A major improvement is needed if we are to get a result in next week's game away to Caltra. Thanks to Aran for their hospitality and thanks to all who travelled on the day.

After promotion last year, our Junior team started the season with a disappointing defeat away to neighbours Annaghdown, 3-10 to 1-7.Cathal Newell opened the scoring with a free but shortly after poor defending by our full back line let Annaghdown in for a soft goal. They added three points with just a Ronan Higgins point in reply from us. We improved as the half went on and points from Cathal Newell and Justin Ryan narrowed the gap to 1-3 to 0-4. Annaghdown replied again but Padraic Walsh then found the net and Cathal Newell added a free to leave us a point up. Another free from Cathal left the half time score 1-6 apiece. That was as good as it got however as we added just one further score in the second half, from sub Enda Hannon. There was alot of good defending and attacking from deep and we had plenty of chances but our finishing was very poor. Best for us were Clive Sullivan and Ronan Higgins.Team- Richard Joyce, Bryan Carey, Steven Nally, Dave Hannon, Ronan Higgins, Ronan Browne, Fintan Joyce, Christy Day, Evan Flynn, Padraic Walsh, Clive Sullivan, Steve Monaghan, Cathal Newell, Adam Keane, Justin Ryan. Subs- Enda Hannon for Adam Keane, Alan Bane for Steve Monaghan, Darren Hannon for Dave Hannon, Ger Flynn for Bryan Carey.

Our Minors made it two wins from three in the league last Wednesday, with a 2-7 to 0-10 victory over St. Brendans' in Headford. The game was a cagey affair in the first half with both sides struggling for scores, with each point for Headford being followed by one for St. Brendans' until Mikey O'Brien hit the net before the break. This left the score at 1-4 to 0-4 at half time. The game opened up in the second period and scored another goal in bizarre circumstances when Geoffrey Corbett's shot eventually dropped into the goal. Our defending was our strongpoint throughout the game and this allowed us to see out the rest of the game without St. Brendans' truly providing a goal threat. Much of this was down to the performances of Darren Higgins and Conor O'Malley. All the more impressive considering Darren along with Mikey O'Brien and Conor Walsh had played a tough u-16 game the night before. All round a much improved team performance following last week's loss to Willaimstown. The minors now lie in third position in the league as they head into the next round of games, they play away to Kilkerrin/Clonberne next Wednesday at 7pm.

Our u16s lost out by 3 points to a strong Athenry team this evening. We started the stronger but were made to pay for 3 bad wides when Athenry scored a goal from their first attack. Eoghan Halloran scored our first point from play but it was quickly cancelled out by an Athenry point. Thomas Newell reduced the deficit to 2 points with our second point but we were to concede a second goal straight away to fall 5 points behind. We had to readjust our lines when Sean Monaghan filling in at half back had to leave the field injured and was replaced by Ciaran Flaherty with Eoghan Halloran moving to the backs. Ciaran had an immediate impact with a point from play and Thomas Newell added his second from play to leave a goal in it. Athenry were to score 2 further goals but we replied with 3 of our own from Conor Walsh(2) and Ciaran Flaherty (1) to leave it all square at half time 3 04 to 4 01. We were to get the first score of the second half from a Mikey O Brien free but Athenry levelled within 2 minutes from play. They scored 1 01 in 5 minutes to lead by 4 but we had Robert Forde to thank for keeping us in the game after that with 5 point blank saves. We were to keep Athenry scoreless for the last 20 minutes but we could only add a point ourselves through Alan Toher from play. We had plenty of chances in those final 20 minutes to score ourselves but some wayward shooting for goals and points cost us. Next up is a home game in 2 weeks vs Salthill B who are unbeaten so far so a big improvement is required to keep our league hopes alive.

Our u-14s got their league off to a flying start with a 5-5 to 4-6 win over Spiddal on Friday in Headford. All the more impressive considering they had 14 men for most of the second half after having a man sent off. However, on Sunday morning they lost out to St. Michaels' 3-7 to 1-5. They now travel to Mervue next Friday to take on St. James' in their next league game.

Thanks to the Galway football panel and management who played a training game at our pitch last Thursday evening. It was great to see many of the players staying on afterwards to sign autographs and take pictures with the local fans young and old.
