Our Intermediates served up a thriller as they defeated Kilkerrin/Clonberne 3-14 to 2-13 after extra time in the first round of the championship last Saturday in Kenny Park, Athenry. The first half of the game was a disaster from our point of view, and despite some good scores from Shane Walsh, Michael Day, Thomas Lee and the 3 Meenaghan brothers we found ourselves 1-9 to 0-6 down at half time. In the second half things did not improve and indeed Kilkerrin scored 3 points in the first 15 minutes while we failed to score and it looked bleak with 15 minutes to go we were 9 points adrift. In truth the game looked over 8 minutes to go we still trailed by 8 but Alan Meenaghan gave us a glimmer of hope after a fine move ended with a goal. Sean Meenaghan then narrowed the gap to 4 before sub Paraic Walsh amazingly drove home our second goal to leave the gap at just one heading into injury time. In what was to be a dramatic finish, with time up we won a free 5 metres beyond the 45 on the right hand side. Being told it was the last kick of normal time Shane Walsh stepped up and his shot from the ground sailed over the crossbar which meant we headed for extra time despite looking dead and buried only minutes before. Once again we made a poor start in extra time and Kilkerrin/Clonberne took advantage by going 4 points ahead after converting a penalty. However, points from Paraic Walsh and Niall Meenaghan kept us in touch and only 2 points down at half time in extra time. After his re-introduction to the game during extra time Championship debutant James O'Brien was excellent and he levelled the game yet again with 3 minutes to go in extra time before Sean Meenaghan won a penalty. Our goalkeeper Clive O'Sullivan stepped up and with the coolest of finishes slotted home the crucial goal. Kilkerrin sent a couple of high balls in an attempt to rescue the game in the dying moments but we broke away and won a free which Niall Meenaghan converted with the last kick of the 80 minutes. In what was a dramatic and heart stopping thriller of a game that showed our never say die attitude of the whole team, our standout perfomers were Shane Walsh, Johnny Leahy at full back, sub Darren Moran and Sean Meenaghan. Credit is due to the commitment being shown by the squad and on a day when we had 9 different scorers and used 22 players it shows that the strength of the panel is what made the difference at the end.
We are due to play Salthill/Knocknacarra in our second game of the John Dunne Cup this Friday at 7:45pm in the Prairie, Salthill.

The u-10s play Dunmore this Saturday in Caherlistrane at 11am, please support.

Hard luck to the u-12s who were defeated by Caherlistrane in the James O'Toole Memorial Cup Final held in Dunmore last Sunday.
