Results:
Division Football League: St Michaels’ 1-13 – Corofin 3-16
Junior B Football Championship West: Salthill 1-08 – St Michaels’2-17
News: St Michaels’ Intermediate men finished off their Division 1A football League group stage with a 3-16 to 1-13 home defeat to current champions Corofin on Thursday last. A goal in the 10th minute (Gary Sice was in quicker for the rebound of the upright than Padraig Conneely would be for a photo opportunity) that put the visitors 1-04 to a point up, put the visitors in the driving seat and effectively they were never going to lose from then on. Also, with both sides already qualified for the semi-finals, players unavailable to both panels for many different reasons, the game probably lacked that extra competitive edge. The supporters enjoyed a 33 score shoot-out along with the newly erected fenced surroundings followed by the usual top class spread laid on by the catering committee. Team: B. Sheridan, L. Brannigan, B. Madden & J. Browne. D. O’ Malley, E. Fiorentini & F. Cruiser. D. Hurley (1-0) & D. McGovern. F. Daly, D. Sinton & E. Day (0-2). D. Thornton , C. Gallagher (0-1) & B. Harlowe (0-8 (1 mark & 6 frees). Subs: G. Rogan, S. Kerr (0-1), C. Cloherty, E. Kerin (0-1) & C. Morley. G. Sice, D. Brady & C. Murphy would appear to be the goal-scorers, whose names were gleaned from the phantom team-list. Next up is a League semi-final against the same opposition in Corofin.
The Junior Bs had a comprehensive victory away to Salthill in the West Junior B Championship on Friday evening last. It was a game that almost wasn’t played as the home side had requested a deferral due to lack of numbers, but they eventually got 27 bodies to fill the Club’s 3rd team’s jerseys and the St Michaels’ 20 (also their 3rd team) that played on the night were more than a match for them. The two half lines (backs & forwards) were the scoring platform for the visitors along with resolute defending from Jaydee at 6 and the two-wheeler Rice in the corner. Team: Gregory (cbwftg), C. Rice, E. Tummon & F. McKeague. C. Morley (0-3), J. Downes & B. Carew (1-1). N. Ward & D. McGovern (0-2). C. McNeill (0-3), E. Coffee 0-7(6f) & K. Keady-Coakley (1-3). P. Mulkerrin (0-1), A. Ryan & C. Mannion. Subs: A. Scally, J. McDonnell, D. Regan, P. Cunningham, P. McGetrick & M. Fiorentini. (cbwftg = Caught Ball-Watching For The Goal). Depending on where you reference the result, there is a point more or less for both teams and the discrepancy could be attributed to the home manager who was multi-tasking and also the score-board operator. Perhaps our Secretary will be able to use his charm & persuasive powers to acquire one of two videos made by the home team! Next up for Michaels’ is a home game against Annaghdown in two weeks time.
