News:

St Michaels’ catering committee will be on duty for the 3rd time in 8 days when Corofin come to town to try & consolidate their position at the top of the table in Division 1 on Thursday next. The final round of matches will determine the finishing positions of Corofin, St Michaels, Claregalway & Tuam Stars. Top two will have home advantage for the Senior League Semi-Finals.

St Michaels’ Junior B team scored a big 3-15 to 0-11 win over Clifden at Westside yesterday. Caomhan Mannion & Nathan Ward got the first two goals and Jaydee replicated Tommy Joe Gilmore’s point from centre half back after a lung-bursting run in the All Ireland Final of 1973, except that our man scored a goal instead. Earlier in the game our goalkeeper corrected the referee and sportingly gave the visitors a point that had originally been waved wide. Black cards were also very plentiful on the night. Team: B. Sheridan, C. Scally, E. Tummon & C. Rice. B. Carew, J. Downes & C. Tummon. D. McGovern & C. Morley. A. Ryan, N. Ward & T. Curran. P. Mulkerrin, D. Thornton & C. Mannion. Subs: G. Rogan, P. Cunningham, P. McGettrick, P. Tormay & G. Martyn. Afterwards the caterers earned their treble bank-holiday time with a great spread for the Clifden and St Michaels’ Junior Bs. Our boys can now look forward to being fed prawn sandwiches in the Árus on Friday!

The Under 19 team came out second best in their West Board League Final against Carraroe on Wednesday last. They now know that they are good and competitive at this grade, and the defeat should leave them good and hungry and looking forward to the Championship in July.

St Michaels’ Juniors qualified for the County Quarter Finals of the League when they defeated Renvyle on a score-line of 0-14 to 1-09 last Friday and will now  be home to one of Corofin, Glinsk, Athenry or Loughrea in a fortnights time. Team: B. Sheridan, L. Brannigan (0-1),  J. Downes & E. Tummon. N. Ward, P. Tormay (0-1) & F. Cruiser. D. McGovern (0-2) & S. O’ Reilly (0-1). D. Flaherty-Shaw, D. Sinton (0-2) & C. Morley (0-1). K. Keady-Coakley (0-2), D. Thornton (0-1) & A. Ryan (0-1). Subs: S. Daly, E. Hoare (0-2) & C. Mannion. D. McGovern, F. Cruiser, B. Sheridan & L. Brannigan were the contenders for the foot-long. The catering committee surpassed the previous highest of standards they had set, when they catered for the local supporters, supporters & players from Killanin & Michaels’  Under 13s (this game must have been a pulsating affair!) and Renvyle & our Junior squads & their management.

Mayor of Gaway: It’s not often that the City’s first citizen calls in to assist his club on the field of play, but, Mayor Eddie Hoare did just that on Friday when he arrived at half time between official engagements, togged out & kicked two points, which coincidentally was the winning margin. Eddie has done trojan work for St Michaels’ off the field this past five years, and let those of us with a vote in Galway Central on Friday next ensure we elect him for another term, so that he can continue the great work.

State Examinations: The Club would like to wish best of luck to all of our members, boys & girls, who are starting their Leaving Cert’ and Junior Cert’ examinations on Wednesday next (tomorrow).
