St Michaels’ Senior team came up agonisingly short against Mountbellew Moylough in the League semi-final on Sunday last at Páirc an Creagáin. After a shaky start, where they conceded an early 1-2, the visiting team settled down to play good quality football for the reast of the hour. They led 1-5 t0 1-2 at the 1st water break, 1-5 to 1-5 at half time nad 1-11 to 2-6 at the 2nd water break. The overall stats’ would indicate that St Michaels’ had 54% of the possession and with maybe a few tweaks here & there and better on-the-ball decision making would see further improvement in this team. A game that contained 29 scores and just 9 wides doesn’t come in to the poor-quality category, and it was a nice prep’ for the looming championship. Final score was: Mountbellew-Moylough 2-12: St Michaels’ 1-14. Team: S. Daly, C. Meagher, S. Maloney & E. Kerin. E. O’ Donnell (1), J. McNicholl (1) & B. Madden (1). D. Cunnane & F. Daly (1). C. Gallagher (1), B. Harlowe & D. Connaughton (2). G. Higgins (3f), E. Hoare (2f) & E. Brannigan (1-2). Subs: P. Tormay & G. Summerville. It is just 4 weeks now until the 1st round of the championship. Milltown, Spiddal & Mountbellew are in our group.

The Junior A team lost out to Micheál Breathnachs by 2-11 to 1-09 at the Westside on Friday last, and by all accounts, will be considered “a brace of points that got away”, as there were many goal chances missed by the home side. The sides were level at half-time with Gavin Summerville scoring the goal. Their next match is against Carraroe where a victory would see them get in to the play-offs.

Hughesy’sHeroes have continued their rich vein of form with another Junior C victory in Moycullen on Saturday evening and the Race Week analogy that this squad was like the Jessica Harrington 3-year-old handicapper running in a 2-year-old maiden at Ballybrit was wide of the mark. Sean Neville, despite the ignominy of conceding 1-1 to his direct opponent eventually settled in to the pace of the game, and the lordly defender finished the match with his reputation intact. Dave McDonagh also caught the eye even though it was suggested that his man was as slow as a post man on overtime Christmas week. Another stalwart to make a big impression was Dermot Guinnane, leaving one to conclude that maple syrup is better for you than Guinness. Final score was: Moycullen 2-8: St Michaels’ 3-14. They have qualified for the West Board Final with a game to spare.

The Under 17 Championship resumes after a break, and St Michaels are away to Carraroe tomorrow (Wednesday) evening at 7:30pm.

The Féile competitions for Galway will take place on the weekend of the 27th & 28th of this month. St Michaels are in a group along with St James, Salthill B & Claregalway B. St Michaels’ will play St James at The Westside on Friday evening (27th Aug) at 6:30pm. Their next 2 games will take place the following day at The Prairie.

The Under 12s are at home to Spiddal on Sunday morning (15th August)

I have no news on how the Under 13s got on in their Final against Loughrea in Pearse Stadium.
