U21 County Semi Final
Cappawhite/Treacys played Newport Gaels, a combination of Newport and Ballinahinch in Lattin on Sunday 29th in the county U21 semi-final.

We got off to a good start when goalkeeper David Orr did well to prevent a point for Newport and from this possession we worked the ball up the field with excellent stick work and passes which culminated in the opening point by Kevin Stapleton. Newport struck back shortly after with a pointed free. Our neighbours were now attacking with vigour and we were forced to foul on numerous occasions as excellent ball was played in to their lively forwards. The games first incident of note occurred at the end of the 1st quarter when Newport were reduced to 14 following an off the ball incident. Oddly this seemed to settle Newport and they were now making their dominance count on the score board. Sean Ryan with 4 points including 2 long range efforts from frees were keeping us in touch. The half time score was 1-7 to 0-6 in favour of Newport Gaels.

After the restart we came out in attacking mode and Pat Deegan burst through for a fine point. Newport showed no sign of relenting however and kept the scoreboard ticking over with some well worked scores and had increased the lead to 5 with 20 minutes to go. Gradually we got on top in the middle third but were unable to convert our possession into scores and we were guilty of poor use of possession. We needed a lift and the arrival of substitutes Darragh Kennedy and Fergal Ryan provided just that as Kennedy won numerous possessions and with 10 minutes to go floated in a ball to the edge of the square where Ryan was on hand to finish to the corner of the net with a first time pull. We were now in the ascendancy as the hitherto unflappable Newport defenders were now being forced into errors and we forced the equaliser when Brian Carey wisely opted to tap over a penalty with 5 minutes to go. The game was in the melting pot now but some excellent defending meant that chances were few and far between for the Newport attackers. As the game entered injury time a driving run from Stapleton through the heart of Newport’s defence resulted in the lead point.  There was still time to play but we stood firm against the onslaught and there was great relief when the final whistle sounded. We now have a wait of 4 weeks at least until the county final where we will take on JK Brackens or the South winners.

The team lined out as follows: David Orr (C), Donal O’Neill (C), Willie Mackey, David Stapleton (C), Andy O’Brien, Sean Ryan (C), Emmet Ryan, Pat Deegan 0-01, Sean Ryan 0-04, Sean Hickey, Kevin Stapleton (C) 0-02, Matt Feehan, Brian Carey 0-03, Shane Fahy, Brian Carew (C).
