“BUY A BRICK” DEVELOPMENT PROJECT 14th December 2009 A Chairde The latest stage of the development of our Club grounds at Kilcommon is nearing completion – we anticipate that the building work on the Clubhouse will be finished by December of this year at a cost of €600,000. We are indebted to The National Lottery for providing substantial finance towards our developments. However, as you will appreciate, we still have a substantial debt which we are anxious to clear as soon as possible to enable us to consider other projects such as a hurling wall and an all weather pitch. We are currently involved in various fund-raising activities such as our weekly Club Lotto and the County Board Draw and are most grateful for the support we have received for these fundraisers over the years. We are continuously seeking various ways of raising finance and are launching a “Buy a Brick” campaign. We are asking for your support for this campaign. You may “sponsor a brick” for a cost of €100 per individual / family. Your sponsorship will be acknowledged on a plaque which will be permanently displayed at the main entrance to the Clubhouse. It will also be displayed on our website. We would appreciate if you would complete the enclosed form and return, by mid January, to: Mary Ryan Mulqueen Loughisle House Bawn Nenagh Co. Tipperary Thanking you Pat Stapleton, Chairman Club Life Presidents T.J. Caplis He played corner back for the club for many years and won two West Tipperary Junior B medals. He was our longest serving treasurer, holding the position for almost 30 years. In the days before computers he managed the coffers in an efficient and astute manner and was always a wise counsel in his own quiet way. He was involved in the formation of the club in 1962.He got a Laochra Ghael award in 2004 Dan Kennedy He was a selector with the club for many years. He was our first chairman serving from 1962 until 1968. He was a committed clubman. He stoutly defended the club at some very stormy West Board meetings in the 1960s. He served as a member of North Tipperary County Council for a long number of years. He was involved in the formation of the club in 1962 and has remained a loyal clubman all his life. His sons Val and Ollie have given great service to the club in hurling and football. Bill Quigley R.I.P. Bill together with his brothers Jack and Tony were great hurlers. Bill was a very knowledgeable selector with the club teams. He was a selector when the club, made the breakthrough in 1966, to win the County Intermediate hurling final. He received the Laochra Ghael award in 2008. His sons Pat and John were outstanding hurlers with the club. Ar dheis de go raibh a anam dilis. Michael O'Brien He won a West Junior B hurling medal in 1974. He gave a lifetime of service to the club and in particular to the juveniles. He was a very good coach and led the juveniles to many West Tipperary championship victories. He was a selector in 1982 when the club won their last West Tipperary senior hurling championship. Unfortunately, an illness in 1989, curtailed his involvement and his input is greatly missed by the club. Fr. Christy O'Dwyer He is a native of Tipperary town. He won a Harty Cup medal with Abbey CBS Tipperary town in 1959 and a Munster minor hurling medal with Tipperary in 1960. He worked tirelessly with the youth, promoting hurling and football, while he was here in the parish. He was a solid and fearless fullback on the Sean Treacy teams of the 1970s, winning 5 West Tipperary senior hurling titles and was captain in 1979. Michael Ryan (D) He was a skilful and courageous player over a long period with the club. He played wingback on the team that won the County intermediate hurling championship in 1966. He played that day against medical advice, which shows the tremendous commitment he had. He played wing back on the County Tipperary intermediate hurling team against Cork in 1967. He has given his lifetime to the club both as a player, selector and as a hard-working committee member. He received the Laochra Ghael award in 2006. TJ O'Dwyer He is arguably one of the best goalkeepers we ever had. We will never forget the vital save he made in the last few minutes of the 1966 County intermediate hurling final against Kildangan. His son Sean continues the tradition as a goalkeeper. He served as the very knowledgeable selector with the club for many years. He was a selector with the Tipperary minor hurlers for 12 years, winning 2 all Irelands and 4 Munster hurling titles. Paddy McLoughlin He was a skilful and tenacious hurler and won 3 West Tipperary senior hurling championships with the club. He was a great leader on the field. He played with the Tipperary intermediate team who won the all Ireland in 1966. He has the distinction of bringing the first all Ireland hurling medal to the club. He was also a very knowledgeable and shrewd selector during the golden era of the club in the 1970s. He continues to be a great supporter of the club and tries to attend all the matches. Laochra Ghael Award Recipients TJ Caplis 2004 Michael Ryan Darby 2006 Mick Caplis 2007 Bill Quigley, RIP 2008 Jerry Fahy 2009 1982 West Tipperary Senior Hurling Champions This was a special year for the Club. It was our 7th West Tipperary senior hurling championship win and it was also the last time we won it. The Club went through a lean period after that for a few years. We are confident that the Club will be back playing senior hurling very shortly. Peter O’Sullivan was our trainer in 1982. The selectors were Mick Caplis, Noel Ryan and Michael O’Brien. We beat Cappawhite and then beat Cashel in a memorable West semi-final. We beat Eire-Og Anacarty in the final. We were subsequently beaten in the County championship by Roscrea. The team was Pat McMahon, John Quigley, Gerry O’Toole, John Hickey, Michael Hickey, Dinny Ryan(C), Philip Ryan(M), JJ Ryan(R), Pat Quigley(Capt.), P.J. Caplis, Phil Ryan( C), Gerry Doyle, John Carey, Dick Brown, Donie Carey. Subs Padraig Ryan(R), Mattie Carey, Liam Ryan(R), Tom Berkery, Tom Hickey, Tom Farrell, Paddy Ryan(C), John Quinlan, Sean Allis, Dan Quinlan and Tommy Ryan(C) Scór Scór started in 1970. The idea was to have competitions to develop and foster Irish dancing, singing, music and entertainment over the long winter months. For many years there were Senior Scór competitions, Junior Scór competitions and Scór na bPaisti competitions. Our club participants won a large haul of medals and trophies since 1970. We won the All Ireland twice. However we had great success at the divisional, county and provincial competitions. The adults and children of the parish, their parents and teachers played a huge role in all of this. General interest in Scór has declined in the country in the past few years. However we are glad to say that a big effort will be made next year by the GAA to revive the Scór competitions. Bórd na nÓg Our juvenile club has been very strong over the years. In the early years there was only one competition and that was for Under 15. We had many successes down the years and won one hurling All Ireland in Feile na nGael in 1990. We won numerous divisional competitions down the years. Next year we are going to revive the McCormack Cup (presented by Ted and Bridget McCormack) for football. We are going on revive the O’Brien Cup (presented by the late Bill O’Brien) for hurling. In addition to this we are glad the say that Pat and Patricia and Niall Butler have donated the Kevin Butler Memorial Cup for an under 14 hurling competition. This is in honour of the late Kevin Butler who played juvenile hurling and football with the club. Our club owes a great debt of gratitude to the parents, teachers and priests of the Parish for their help and co-operation down the years. The upstairs arena in the new complex at Kilcommon cross will be used extensively for the benefit of our juveniles.
