Last Saturday evening the West Senior championship began with Golden and the Kickhams kicking off a long series of games in Tipp town. Right from the start the twn teams went at it hammer and tongs and two early goals by Shane Stapelton and John Colohan had Golden motoring in the early stages. But the Dundrum lads gradually began to reel them in and a goal just before half had them back within three points of Golden at the break. In the second half it was a different Dundrum, they took the game to Golden from the start and began to dominate. To the credit of our lads they fought very hard but found it difficult agains a much slicker Dundrum unit. In the end Kickhams ran out Comfortable winners on a scoreline of 2-16 to 3-6. Hard luck to the lads, next Sunday evening they play Cashel in Tipp town in what is now a must win game for both teams- we wish them the best of luck.
The U/21 hurlers had a fine win last Sunday morning in Annacarthy in the U/21 B west championship when they defeated Sean Treacys on a scoreline of 1-12 to 1-04. Sean Treacy's got off to a flyer when in the opening two minutes the corner forward raced through to blast past Golden Keeper Christopher Ryan. However Golden battled back gamely and got some fine scores to level the game at three apiece after ten minutes. The rest of the first half was a tight affair, Sean Treacy's guilty of giving away some soft frees which Daithi Ivors effortlessly scored from all angles of the field. Golden suffered a setback after twenty minutes when impressive wing back Leamie Byrnes had to leave the field with a foot injury. Half time the scores were level Golden 0-6 Sean Treacys 1-3. Early in the second half it was Golden’s turn to strike for an early goal when the ioutstanding Daithi Ivors blasted home from close range. This seemed to knock the life out of Sean Treacys and Golden proceeded to dominate until the final whistle with Brendan Moloney particularly impressive in the middle of the field. Overall the game was close contest but Golden gradually began to pull away to record a comfortable victory in the finish.
This evening our minor hurlers kick off their campaign against Solohead in Solohead at 7pm. We wish them and the management team of
Ger Luby, John Colohan and Mick Dell all the best.
On Saturday evening the Golden GAA field reopens for the big games again when we host the meeting
