MENS NOTES

A superb first half performance by our intermediate team did not prove enough for them to win their quarter final tie against Athenry, played in Kenny Park on Sunday.  Corofin led by 0-10 to 1-3 at half time, with all but one of their points coming from play.  However they failed to match this performance in the second half and Athenry advanced on a final score of Athenry 2-9 to Corofin 0-12.  Well done to the team and management on their hard work and commitment all year.

Corofin juniors were defeated by Tuam Stars in the Junior Football Championship – North, played last Friday.

Please support our minors who play Tuam Stars in the Minor A Football Championship North semi-final, at 7.00 pm in Tuam Stadium this Wednesday evening, with referee Teddy Kerin.

Corofin progressed to the 2nd Round of the U16A Championship following their win over Oughterard last Tuesday (19 Aug) evening.

Many thanks to those club members, both ladies and men, who helped with the stewarding and other work at the matches on Sunday in Corofin.  It proved to be a long day as the last game did not finish until 9.00 pm.  A large crowd attended the two championship games and our pitch was resplendent for the occasion.  Thankfully all are well following a very busy day.  Sincere thanks also to the Scahill family who allowed us the use of their field for parking.

Remember that the “Walk with the Clubs” funraiser for Pieta House in memory of Cormac Connolly, takes place on this Thursday 28 August, starting in Portumna and visiting All-Ireland winning clubs Portumna, Killimor, Mullagh and finishing in Kiltormer.  Special guests walking on this day will be members of All-Ireland winning Galway clubs, as well as representatives of many clubs in Galway.   Details of how to participate in this event can be found on our club website.

LADIES FOOTBALL:

U8s training takes place every Tuesday at 6.15 in Belclare.

The U10s had a game against Annaghdown on Tuesday and have training Thursday at 6.15 in Belclare.

U12s training takes place on Tuesday and Thursday at 6.15 in Belclare.  The first championship game against St Gabriels is arranged for Aughrim pitch on the 30th August at 1.30 pm.

Well done to the Galway senior ladies who won the All-Ireland quarter final defeating Monaghan by 17 pts to 14 pts.  Tracey Leonard made a valuable contribution when introduced as a sub in the second half, scoring a vital point late on.  Galway now play Dublin in the semi-final next Saturday.  Good luck to our senior players on the panel, Tracey Leonard, Leonie Higgins, Meadhbh Maloney and Tina Hughes.

As you may know the senior lads have been nominated by the Corofin Ladies to do the ‘Ice Bucket” challenge.  We await developments!
