GAA CLUB NOTES

On Sunday afternoon the Senior team played their Connacht Club Championship Final against St Brigid’s of Roscommon in Dr Hyde Park, Roscommon. Unfortunately it was not to be our day as St. Brigid’s were crowned Connacht Club Champions for 2023.

It was a slow first half which saw Brigid’s build a handsome lead with the help of a penalty that Bernard Power could do little about. Conor Cunningham ignited some life into the Corofin play as he spear-headed a great team move through the middle of the pitch, but his effort struck the crossbar and the danger was cleared. However, a Corofin goal was not far away as, soon after, Liam Silke popped up in the forwards like he normally does to hit the back of the Brigid’s net and give Corofin a lifeline before the break. The halftime score stood at Corofin 1-02 St Brigid’s 1-06.

The second half started relatively positive from a Corofin perspective. Conor Cunningham made another burst through the middle of the pitch but his effort was deflected just wide of the upright for a 45. A bit like the first half, Conor’s charge was a sign of an eventual Corofin goal to come. The ball was worked down the left wing and brought inside, with Dylan McHugh playing a one-two with Michael Farragher and palming the return pass over the keeper’s head and into the net. The timing of that goal had cut a halftime deficit of 7 points down to just 1 point. However, St Brigid’s reacted very strong and kicked 2 unanswered points to stretch the lead back to 3 points and take the momentum out of Corofin’s play. The game finished Corofin 2-05 St Brigid’s 1-13.

Despite the loss on Sunday, it has been an incredible year for the Senior team; defending their Senior League title and winning their 25th County Championship title against the odds. With such youth blended into the side, the experience of Connacht Club Championship football will boost the development of these players and we are already looking forward to what can be achieved next year. Well done lads!

UNDERAGE

The U-7 and U-8 Boys groups finished up their year on Saturday with a training session for the ages! Some members of the U-19 panel and the Senior panel came to the training and brought along the U-19 North Board Championship Cup, Senior League trophy and the Frank Fox Cup. The lads helped hand out the coveted Selection Boxes to the boys. Well done to all the boys on their incredible year of developing their footballing skills and having great fun along the way. Thank you very much to the dedicated coaches and mentors of both groups for their time and efforts in making the year so memorable for the payers.

The U-12 Girls group finished up their year also on Saturday with their 70th training session of the year! It was home to freshen up and back to Belclare later that afternoon for some pizza and chips, they were presented with certificates detailing each game the played for the club this year and there was even a surprise guest after the food; DJ Nightshift! The girls danced the evening away as Martin played every single request they made. Thank you also to the coaches and mentors for this group, organising training and matches for 56 players is no meant feat. Well done to all!
